Post subject:  1967 Mk1 Cooper S 3 speed syncro transmission Serial Numbers
Is the range of serial numbers available for the calendar year 1967 for the Mk1 Cooper S?

The reason for this request is that I have to replace the transmission case for my Mark 1 Cooper S as I damaged it and had to have it welded. I'm currently wanting to restore the car to the best possible condition consistent with original manufacturing data.

My transmission case part number is X SM 22G333 with a serial number that is 12 FA 11131.

I would like to replace it with a case that has the same part number and if possible a serial number close to mine.

I would very much appreciate some help in this regard.

I have been collecting a bit of data on gearboxes lately but haven't really been matching up the serial numbers to their original cars.

The X code box is listed as being used on the later 970S and apparently needs modification for a 1275 crank.

I would have thought your car should be using the Q code box.

Freddos car 1784 has serial number 12FA 13109 in his build thread but unsure if it original to the car.

Thanks for your reply gtogreen1969.

My car is an original Mk 1 Cooper S as I bought it new in August 1967. It has been in my possession and continuously registered the whole time.

My engine number is 9F/SA/Y45339.

All components of the vehicle including the gearbox case are as originally supplied by BMC.

Could you please clarify for me what the prefixes X, Y, and Q mean in the part number?

Bare with me as not all the info is in one place and some is still open to conjecture.

Here is a list of mini gearboxes which covers most of the main ones used. http://www.minispares.com/catalogues/cl ... spx?1~4~33 The 22G333 is listed as being used on the 970S and 1275S.

There are 3 different final drives that were used. The 970S had 3.76 ratio and rubber joints. The early 1275S had 3.44 ratio and rubber joints from 9FSaY31001 to 9FSAY41233. The later 1275S from engine 9FSAY 41234 had the 3.44 ratio but used hardy spicer unijoints. https://www.minimania.com/pdfile/gearboxes.pdf and http://mk1-performance-conversions.co.uk/gearboxes.pdf

Using info from the various forums I have noticed that people with a 970S are saying they have the X code box with a 9FA stamping. The Y and Q boxes that pop up are stamped with 12FA.

Yours is the first X code box I have seen with the 12FA so I will have to change my data base to include the X code with the 1275s. I have to admit that I took a leap of faith that the 3 different final drives lined up with the 3 different codes because that was a reasonable assessment without any formal evidence.

None of this really helps you with your original question so I apologize for that.

Colour 1/TOGA WHITE/1

Radiator Cowl numbers are: M2/06 2498 (the 06 is not quite legible because I assume that Stamp was a one-piece stamp and my stamping has been angled towards the top of the M 2 thus leaving the faint impression of the 06 illegible under fresh paint. I really don't want to remove the new paint to expose it.)

One for gtogreen . Just wondering what year this mk1 3-spd syncho S box is from? 22g333, Q, 12FA 13276 , hardy spicers, 3.44 and has a few "extras" inside. Picked it up probably 20+ years ago. Also, what would it be worth ? (I know that's a "how long is a piece of string" question.)

I am guessing early to mid 1967. Here are 2 with serial number around yours.

9FSAY 41742 fitted with a 22G333 gearbox. Serial No 12FA 13109
9FSAY 44262 fitted with a 22G333 gearbox. Serial No 12FA 13284

Any dates stamped into the box?

The stamped serial number is probably more significant than the casting number for dating purposes. 22G333 is a bare case (no studs, gaskets, diff housing, etc) and dates from late 1963 up to mid 1967 .

Probably stamped underneath. I would be looking in these 2 locations first.

Here is a set of photos people have shared in the past showing the date stamp for early boxes. If there is a letter then it should be reference to the Month. (A=Jan. F=Jun, H=Aug, M=Dec) They skip the I as it can confused with a 1.

The Cooper S engines were fitted to our cars about 5-6 months after being built in the UK so your box might have a 66 somewhere if dated.
