Hi Mini peeps,
I have been fortunate enough to get my hands on a few minis that have been stored in a farmers shed for the past 30 years. They obviously need some work but I want to get them registered on SA as they came with no paperwork.

All cars have compliance plates and number plates.

How do I go about this?

Many thanks in advance [PERSON WITH FOLDED HANDS]

Nice find, and well done on wanting to get them back on the road. Another few Minis saved.

An obvious starting point is the SA Rego authorities. I'd call them to sort out the steps involved. Having ADR or ID plates should make things straight forward I reckon.

Another step is to submit an FOI request to get the registration history. They won't supply previous owners personal details but all other information will be provided. There's usually a small fee involved.

If I'm carrying on like a pork-chop, I'm having a great time.

If I go very quiet there's a very good chance I broke something.

I tried in 2015 this was the response.

"You would only be able to apply for the vehicle information if it was registered in your name in S.A., as that is information about your period of ownership. You can apply for it, and pre payment is required, with your application form, that Leah has advised you about below." and

"If you provide the required information upon application with your payment, as outlined to you, and you owned the vehicle for the period you are enquiring about in South Australia, you should be eligible for available information."

I did this for my mini. Unfortunately the RTA of NSW went to a computer system around 1990. So all data prior to this date was destroyed. I was hoping I could get original rego dates, places...etc from 1970 onwards.

Pretty sure there’s a form for exactly your needs. My family did it years ago with an XW Falcon we restored. It’s basically a statement that you have bought it (ie, not stolen it) and want to register it. As best i’m aware, no ID or roadworthy inspections required.

One of the (few) joys of SA rego!

I have owned a Mini since 1967 but it's been off the road in SA since 1983. I'm now restoring it, and have the original plates still but no paperwork from back then. When I enquired at the local motor registration branch here in Adelaide they said they had no record of the plates or my ownership because the system pre computers was no longer accessible and all the data was no longer available.

In NSW I registered a Mini that hadn't been registered since 1980 and that was from when it was in SA.

They didn't think there was enough info on the receipt I provided, so they got me to do up a stat Dec on the spot, they witnessed it and was all good. Walk out with number plates.

No offence meant to either Morbo28 or Slide...but what an epic fail for their respective state authorities...what a joke!

I acquired a car with R plates. It was last registered in 1978. I rang DPTI (13 10 84) and they said I need to fill in a form and take it in to ServiceSA.
I think it was an MR1? Downloaded and filled it in. Paid money.
Car was registered after 30yrs.
Easy as (surprisingly!)
I was at the ServiceSA site when they opened and the queue was over 1/2hr wait.

Oh....and I retained the original plates!

I did this exercise in 2012 with a 1974 vehicle. - Because it was pre ADR'S & Compliance legislation, it was no problem. I took it to Lonsdale for inspection because it had never been registered in Australia & the inspector just ticked all the boxes right there & then because the vehicle was presented properly. - He didn't even ask for the receipt. - It was registered (on Historic reg.) that afternoon.
BUT, - In 2006, I took my Mini that had already been registered in my name in NSW to Regency Park, & they made me fit the original steering wheel & road wheels before they would pass it for historic reg. - I still can't figure it out, because they objected to the period correct Moto Lita & Minilites ...

Nothing's happened yet because I'm still restoring it and thought I'd wait to deal with the registration at the end of the process. It too has the 'R' plates from the sixties.

But hey, Jubblies, that is encouraging news about your success with a similar situation to mine. I wonder if all SA Motor Registration Branches are created the same - the one I went to seemed as though they weren't too interested in trying to trace old car ownership details, possibly because there were about a hundred folk waiting to be served and very few staff on the counter.

Technically, under the State Records Act 1997, government agencies are not supposed to destroy public records that have ongonig administrative value or are likely to be of continuing public interest - either hardcopy (paper) records or electronic (computer generated) databases. I know this because I worked there in the 80s and for the past 30 years have been the City of Adelaide archivist.
