Hi All,
Have been trawling the threads and see that there isn’t really a consensus on the best coating when refurbishing subframes.
- POR15 is affected by brake fluid
- Powder coating sheets off
- etc
What’s the best way to go?

I have been pretty happy with the KBS products. Black top or something I think.

I used KBS Rust Seal on the sub-frames which is a moisture cured urethane very similar (I believe) to POR 15. I am using Dot 5 brake fluid which wont eat paint. I have had the brake fluid overflow on to the body paint (2 pack) and the sub-frame with no affect. So far I am happy with my choices.

I've not had issues with POR15 and brake fluid - even when I brushed it on on purpose to try and get it off! Haha!

I've always just had my subframes sandblasted and painted with industrial / marine grade epoxy primer and top coat.
My oldest one painted that way has been sitting in the backyard for a decade in the sun - it's a bit faded but otherwise still pretty good.

I'm a fan of POR15. No issues with brake fluid myself.

I had my subframes blasted
I then used por 15 and over laid it with por 15 chassis black
which is a mat finish
Though as old boots
spilt brake fluid on the front sub frame whiles changing a brake switch ,
had no effect on the paint

No other way to go, grit blasting then powder coating .Not expensive .Por does go dull

I've used KBS rust seal on all mine so far and it is tough and doesn't chip off easily-also had no problems with brake fluid at all.
I'm getting the subframes of my current project blasted and then powder coated at the moment.
Mainly because it was cheaper and easier than painting them myself but i do expect it to chip off more easily than the KBS product.
If i were not doing it the lazy way-I'd choose the KBS Rust Seal (same product as POR15-just made in Australia and cheaper to buy).

Por 15 is not uv tolerant and will dull off if exposed to sun ( uv )
that is one reason I went over it with chassis black
not that the subframes see much sun light
powder coat chips and then starts to peel

my preference only , I don't like powder coat

Same, if you're worried about fading, use the chassis black top coat. I found it far superior to powder coating in my experience, particularly for something that can get but by rocks etc. My powder coating experience has included chipping and more fragile than POR15.

But at the end of the day regardless of whether you ask about coating, oil, radiator etc, on a forum you will get a range of responses from people and each will believe their method is the best :) not unlike religion.

My opinion.

Once powder coat peels there's no stopping it.

Do sand blasting companies apply POR 15? Or is that a “self application” activity?

But owning and working on a Mini is a religion, isn't it?

Don't we all worship the hallowed ground our Mini stands on?

A Mini badge is like a high priest, to be held in reverent esteem, and the S badge is the deity at the pinnacle to be exalted, much like the Dalai Lama in the Buddhist faith (or Mr. Bridger in The Italian Job). :)

Haha winnabbey.

Zulu - the sandblaster I have used asked what finish I wanted. I selected just etch primer (not a great choice I have learned). But I got the impression he would apply other coatings if I so desired. I guess it'll depend on the shop.

I painted both my frames with POR15, the rear one is holding up but the entire front one is peeling off and wrinkling around the MC's. I won't use it again.
I'm not upset with the product I just will try something else now.
