Post subject: | Timing Questions? |
Hi all, have got a couple of questions about timing with a Pulsar Dizzy. 1. The D4R83 has 16* total centrifugal advance (that's dizzy degrees..). Does this mean that if you have timed your motor to 10* @ 1000 rpm that at full advance it will be 26*? 2. I have read the threads about this dizzy and it has been mentioned about very little to no detonation is the way to go. How do you know if you have very little to none? 3. It has also been metioned about kick back on startup. What is this? Sorry about the long winded post but I am having troubles with getting the timing right. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hehe I have been fooling around with my timing for the past 2 weeks. I'm no expert by any means but this is what I did from Mini_Crank's advice and Dr Mini's expert knowledge, and it works really well. There are more ways to do it but this one is piss easy and it works: 1) Undo the dissy clamp nut just enough so you can grab the dissy and turn it with your hands 2) turn the idle up to 2000rpm via the carb idle speed screw 3) turn the dissy clockwise really slowly until the revs start to rise and stop rising 4) turn the idle back to 2000rpm 5) turn the dissy anti clockwise backwards so that the idle dies down to 600rpm 6) turn the idle speed screw so that it idles at 1100rpm again You will be pretty useably close to correct with this neat trick. Notes: 1) Mark the dissy on this setting (I use liquid paper ![]() 2) Is your engine stock or modified? I have a 1152cc, a ported 12G295 head with big valves, mild road cam and a dellorto and it likes it at least 7-8 degrees more advanced (Clock wise). Anything less than that and it runs like a VW on heat... 3) if you are too far advanced it will kick back at startup when it's cold. If so turn it back 1 degree at a time until it starts perfectly. Mine doesn't like it at this setting so I have to rig up some sort of kill switch to start the car ![]() ![]() 4) If it's too redarded then from low revs there is no pick up or power. You will notice when it's retarded, you step on it, big noise but nothing happens ![]() I'd like to thank the Dr Mini Acedemy ![]() |

Theres a fare bit of info on distributors here http://www.teglerizer.com/mgstuff/lucastuning.pdf Even mentions the pulsar one. I'm pretty sure you double the dissy degrees to get crank dregrees. |

Quote: turn the dissy anti clockwise backwards so that the idle dies down to 600rpm
6) turn the idle speed screw so that it idles at 1100rpm again 68deux close but not quite, disconnect the vacuum advance 1st. turn idle to 2000rpm. turn dizzy closkwise till revs stop rising. turn back the idle to 2000rpm. now twist the dizzy aback untill revs drop about 500-600rpm. lock dizzy up and reconnect vacuum advance and then reset the idle. then go take it for a test drive you should be real close. |

Vac advance? Chong & I don't need no stinkin' vacuum advance.. we run Dellortos... ![]() Of course Jai is right, if you have an SU... ![]() To answer the original question.. 16 dizzy degrees = 32 engine degrees. ![]() D4R85 has 12 degrees dizzy advance = 24* at crank. I find them better in Minis but harder to find (out of manual Pulsars). If you have an D4R83 I reckon it will run better if you strip it and weld a bit on the stop, so it only goes 12* or so. I have one, & will do this trick soon... ![]() |

drops 600rpm from 2000. you will be really close to where it needs to be. |

Sorry, drops 600! ![]() Well speaking of timing, i have done it! I think I am 99% correct with the timing on my car. I have rigged up a kill switch for the coil so it will start without kicking back. Gee the timing makes a big difference ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thanks for all the info. Seems real easy this way. Will give it a go today and let you's know how I went. Pete |

Then the timeing...Pulsar R85...looks like he was advance by quite a bit..no idea how to tell the degrees....But..Chong..Morris is ready for a fight now ![]() I also heard that GR Van will will kick our butts..but He cant win his own sponcered trophy ay |

I'm assuming standard 1100, but since this engine was supposed to be an 850, so it could be anything (though its not really rough at idle, so ![]() |
