Acquire a set of stock rims for rego, then return to mag wheels once ur passed.
I'm sure a lot of people use this method.

I have been pinged on my pink slip - tyres outside body. It is a 77 clubman, with the spacered drums all round, with jelly bean 10 x 4.5 mags with yokohama a008 tyres. Flares are the cheap black plastic screw ons - innconeti type I think they're called. I have rung the RTA on advice of mechanic as it is a "grey area". RTA says rim 1" wider than standard, but track also no more than 26mm wider than standard. So what is the standard track width for my car? I need to provide this so the mechanic can measure it and sign it off. I'm thinking I might run into problems here becuase of the stepped drums coupled with the mags (which might have the wrong offsett.) Can anyone help here???? |

That was my first thought Big willy, but in event of accident, if my car not legal, then I'm up for big dollars. I would like to keep the spaced rear drums to, as will be fitting discs in the future.... Does anyone know what the standardx rear track is??? |

I think this is your easiest option. Keep a set of unspacered drums on hand, should be easy to find a set, making sure they suit your pads will be the next problem though if they've been machined. or borrow a set of standard rims with 145 tyres.. |

Um the cooper S, clubman GT, 1275LS(I presume) used spacer drums right so you are going to a standard track for a mini (roundnose or clubman) so the RTA shouldn't have a problem as long as you cover the wheels up with some flares
Sort of I guess like you can upgrade any mini to a 1275 as long as you put disks on it as well Cause I could be wrong but it sounds like they are being a pedantic or didn't know the cooper S etc had a wider track anyway. IMO just cover the wheels up with flares and be done with it.

Actually I don't understand the situation. You have spacered drums, are running a standard offset wheel and have flares. This should be exactly what an S is like... Is it that the wheels stick outside of the flares or you don't have flares?? I am confused... If you have flares, spacered drums (or discs, same width right?) and regular offset wheels then that would be like all of the other S's and S lookalikes out there... right? The tyres should just be under the flares. I'd take it to someone else that knows minis

I assumed his wheels are outside his flairs. I may be wrong also. As long as the wheels are inside the flairs they wont have a problem with them. You can do the easy fix with a spare set of skinny wheels, but permanent fix would be wider flairs. I got mine licensed recently, they didnt care what the track was as long as the wheels were inside the flairs. or.. get your girlfriend to take it over the pits Girls get away with murder

Drums should be spacered...standard 'S' Clubby.. get bigger arches, or smaller rims..or better yet post a pic so we can best advise.. I'd go to someone else

I'm running the same wheels on spacered drums with S flares. Yes it's barely legal flares-wise, but no worse than my other car which has Mini offset Contessas under Inno flares.... The real problem is that both these wheels are designed for the old flat drums- by using spacered drums or S brakes suddenly the track is widened by 50mm. 
<edit> 90% of Minis out there are technically illegal on track, so I wouldn't worry too much. You are in good company. 
Just keep the tyres covered and nobody (in NSW anyhow) really gives a crap.
BTW, Cooper S (or Clubby GT) front track is 1.25M, rear is 1.19M. According to my Leyland Black book.. |

Or you could go the sneaky, and get some of that 4wd rubber strips that you can put under the arches, apparently that is ok (according to my mechanic who is VERY mini friendly, and also does roadworthies) he said my wheels were ok, and i asked a police officer and i tell him i have asked my mechanic and he said they were ok, so the copper said "is he a good mechanic?" and i said "what do you mean" Copper says "well does he do roadworthies?" and i says "yeah" and he says "well they are fine then" so i got off alright even though i reckon i can see a hint of tread sticking out... yeah best bet would be wider arches, or a cheaper option may be rubber strips. does anyone know anything about this? |

Thanks for all the replies guys. Embarrassingly, I do not know what type of Clubman I have. It could be standard, "S" or even LS. The point about the track is, If the car came from the factory with flat faced drums, then that is what I need to base the track on, and hence my car is not legal in RTA's eyes. If it did come with stepped drums, then it's sweet, and I can just get some wider flares. My usual mini mechanic retired, and the new bloke refused to even look at the mini. So I asked around to see who was old car friendly in town, and I ended up where I am. I'm thinking he's been inspected recently or been in trouble tho , which is why he's pedantic about my wheels. |

I'd find another mechanic/inspector... who understands Minis. Early standard Clubby came with flat drums & 3.5" wheels, the S got stepped ones & 4.5" ones. Why not just buy/borrow some Clubby S 4.5x10 steel wheels, then it'll be `bog stock legal'.
pssssssssst... swap 'em back after testing..
Does it have factory flares with metal under? If so it's `probably' a Clubby S. BTW the RTA would have NFI which drums it came with, so stick with the stepped ones. |
