I'm looking to buy some non-mini second hand BMC stuff from the UK through a private seller. Realistically I just want to buy a rod change gearbox for a 1500 E series motor.
What is the most cost effective way of shipping something like that to Australia. I did up a quote through one transport company using rough weight and dimensions and it came to around $400! That can't be the ballpark price, can it?
Cheers,

I've bought carbs and other small things from private sellers - hasn't been any more painful than via a mini shop or otherwise. A gearbox could be a different story though because it really needs to be in a forkliftable box or pallet. Perhaps (sneakily) talk to a UK online retailer about who they use and how much it costs for shipping a rebuilt Mini engine or gearbox to Australia.
Someone (not saying who) once brought out a special set of tyres for me, the seller wouldn't post them to Australia so I had them shipped to the person who was packing a container for him, then I picked them up from him when it arrived. It took several months, but I wasn't in any hurry.
You could also look at removalists - plenty of people move from UK to here - they pay someone to do it for them who would be happy to take a bit of cash if there is some free space
