For the ignition panel on a 1966 S, is the "choke-lock" control knob on the LH and the "heater-push" on the RH?
I think I'm getting mixed up with the lights and wipers switches that were reversed in later models, but were the heater and choke always this way round?

I have probably fitted them reversed which will explain why the heater cable won't reach.....

Bill, the Australian Cooper S handbook TP766A has heater on the left and choke on the right.

I have always followed the information in the owners manual. Heater cable on the far left.

This isn't good news, Timmy. The heater cable won't reach the heater tap on the head. Mk2 had heater on the right (at least mine does)?

Same with my MK II

The engineering drawing below (AYG9344), released in July 1970, is meant to be the primary source specification for the layout of Mini switches and controls. The assembly line and publication producers for the driver's handbook and workshop manual should have taken their information from this drawing. Of course it's possible subtle changes were made and this drawing not updated.

Winnabey's drawing has me stumped - every Australian Mk1 Mini I have ever had anything to do with has the wiper switch on the left and the lights on the right. This drawing suggests that by 1970 at least they were reversed?? Or did the work experience boy do this drawing? Anyone have an original Aussie car with the switches as per the drawing layout?

The drawing was produced in July 1970 so doesn't include earlier models. It was subsequently updated to include the Clubman style models as per the legend.

Yep, my ‘68 Deluse is lights left, (single speed) wipers right - which I too had assumed was incorrect. If you think about it though, you need the wipers closer to hand than the lights, really.

The light and wiper switch positions were swapped around when the OZ Lucas electrical equipment was fitted from around 67/68.
I thought my S had them fitted the wrong way but if you swap them over the wiper switch is upside down as the switches only fit into the switch panel one way due to the locating flat.

A previous discussion about the wiper/headlight switch change when the wiper motors changed.

Still doesn't help you with your shortened heater cable not reaching the passenger side.

Yes, gtogreen! I would like to "fix" this issue this weekend but still no answer.
I have read about the lights & wiper switches reversed - as miniron said, can't get it wrong due to the locating flats in the early and late panel.
The supplier of the cables is not aware of a problem in the length of their cables.
So:
If the heater cable is on the left on the ignition panel, does the cable pass through the hole in the firewall directly in front of it, then bend behind the carbs/exhaust to reach the heater tap?
Also the choke cable, then, must also cross sides to reach the front carb. Yes?

On my car (68) and I would say a 66 should be same, the “heater push” is on left goes straight forward thru firewall, snakes across right behind carbs then left to tap. The choke goes straight forward then loops left to carbs.

If the “push” type heater cable is too short to do this there is something wrong. I’ll try and measure mine when I can.

The heater and choke swapped positions for the mark 2 but not sure if straight away or slightly later. I think some of the styles of knobs may have been a bit mix and match with early mk2

Same with mine. Both cables go straight ahead through the firewall.
Heater cable then turns 90 deg to the drivers side.
Choke cable goes past the drivers side carby then turns 90 degrees to the passenger side.

Both cables just reach as I suspect they have been trimmed down a few times in their lifetime.

Thanks All - esp. PhillB and gtogreen for referring to actual routing on their cars.
I have managed to get the heater cable to just reach the water tap by running it under the carb float bowl- but looks amateurish. Period photos show the cable running parallel with the heater hose in a sweeping arc around the back of the carbs. I suspect the original cables were longer and the reproductions have copied the length of the Mk2 cables.
The Mk2 layout is more direct and neater.
Thanks for everyones' input.
