Does anyone know where to get the original looking webbing for the door check straps?

On my 1970 vehicle it's simply seat belt webbing.

My 1969 also uses seat belt webbing.

I am pretty sure they were Grey check straps made from seat belt webbing of the time. I don't know if anyone is making that pattern anymore. Maybe ask the guy doing Winabbeys seat belts if he has a few off cuts. The only other option is to cut up an old seat belt.

May not be what you wish to use as an alternative to the original webbing but they were a 'period accessory'.

That's what I've done.

While on the subject of check straps, I believe some of the factory documentation seems to indicate they matched the strap to the interior colour in the approx 67 - 72 period. However did this ever occur in practice, most just seem to be grey.

Thats interesting. I did see a service bulletin somewhere (somewhere meaning Dougs) saying the seat belt colour was to be matched to the trim colour from 1967. Maybe it was on the same service bulletin.

Thanks for the replies.

The car did not have any door check straps when I bought it. I bought some vinyl straps from UK before I knew the originals where meant to be seatbelt webbing. The vinyl straps are 43mm wide and fit the clamps OK. I then bought some 50mm wide grey seatbelt webbing which is actually more like 48mm wide but the material seems to be too wide for the clamps. I then thought it might need to be 38mm (1-1/2") webbing but I can't find any in grey.

Could someone with original straps run a ruler over theirs and let me know what width and length they are?

I'm probably way over thinking this but I'm trying to stay close to original where I can.

That’s correct and they did start matching the seatbelts to interior and that is in a bulletin, but I think the mention of the check straps colour is in the trim charts.

Mine had been replaced with black seatbelt webbing and I then replaced it with old grey seatbelt webbing because that’s what most seem to have (apart from later Minis where they seem to be black)

I don’t know the exact width of the old seatbelt webbing but it seemed to fit ok.

I think some of the new “old style’ webbing is a little narrower. Regardless I think the webbing is meant to be wider than the clamp anyway. I rekon in Aus they decided the vinyl wouldn’t last and decided to use seatbelt webbing instead. Can’t access my car atm to check width.

I’m sure I have plenty of old grey material if you like, but maybe we might be able to work out what they actually used and when. That year and model is your car? What colour interior?

If you look in the link below you'll see in the first example (Specifications 78) dated 1967 a Mk1 Cooper S is listed as:
Paint: Burgundy
Interior: Doeskin
Check Straps: Seat belt webbing grey

The Mk2 list (SAS 93) dated 69-70 has seat belts and door check straps listed as the same colour

My '69 K has one original door strap - grey X 50mm (even). Its seat belts were originally a light green as the car was green but upholstery is "parchment" (off-white). Definitely original fitments.
My '70 S also has grey door straps. Original seat belts were black - interior is black. Didn't own the car from new but fairly sure this is original as I doubt the door checks were changed under SPO 41.

Mine is exactly the same - black trim, black seat belts and grey door check straps that are 2 inches (50 mm) wide.

Again thanks for the replies.

It looks like 50mm grey is the right material. I've already got some so I'll run with that.

Doug, by the look of your photo the ends are doubled up, presumably for added strength at the bolt holes?
