Years ago I was taking a Torana to get a blue slip for rego. I had spent probably 6 months restoring it. I had 'TRAFFIC" written on paper, stuck to where the plates should be. A lady rear ended me and did about $4000 damage.

I went to the cops and reported the accident (they didn't come to the accident scene). On the accident report paper it had a place for REGO #. I asked what to put, because the car was unregistered, and I told them I had 'TRAFFIC' on it...because I am such a good boy. :lol:

They told me that there had never been a law stating you had to put that on your car, and it is perfectly legal to drive an unregistered car with no plates, as long as you are taking it to a place of repair or to the motor registry.

So all these people who put 'TRAFFIC' on their cars are wally's :P

So are some cops, I'd double check exactly what you have to do if you are even going to think about going for a drive in JAM.

Yea well I have to take JAM for a wheel alighment next weekend or some time during the week. I replaced the tie rods (and rack) and even though I did an alignment by eye, it's certainly not right.

I need to get a front exhaust mount done as well......the one that is welded to your LCB and attaches to your box. Mine has none, and it's best done on a hoist.

If you drive your car with "TRAFFIC" written on it, you are just asking to get the attention of the boys in blue. Trust me. So many people do it ... i dont know why.

- Drive unregistered car ($472)

- Not pay road tax ($472)

I think that if you are genuinely taking it to a workshop that isn't necessarily the closest to your place, you'd have to get a cop on a pretty bad day to book you. Especially with a car like a mini - not many of us would go to the servo around the corner.

As long as you could show where you had it booked in, and you weren't just out doing the shopping I think you'd be fine as long as you didn't get an arsehole cop on a bad day!!! Most I have found to be great - especially when driving the mini.

Mr Bob I agree. I know I wouldnt give someone a ticket for it, if they were driving it to a specialised repairer. As long as its a reasonable distance (ie from sydney to newcastle isnt reasonable :P), and you have insurance or at least a coverslip :)

In Vic you get a temporary rego paper. You can drive the car when and where you want between 7 and 7, and you have the slip for a month.

hey lucas when i was doing it i rung the local cop shop and asked them what to do and the cop said just write a letter of intent and carry it with you dated for the day that you are doing it

OR have the contact number for the place you are taking it ... then if ur stopped the COPS can call the repairer and make sure you are booked in ... thats what i reckon anyways :)

how much for a temp rego paper :P ..... or is it free ... that would be nice but with vicroads i wouldnt hold my breath .....

my plan .....
take old car onto road .... with friends kill tyres on set car limp it back home and fix then repeat :P

hehe just be careful but
in that thing they never said anything about DRIVING IT HOME!
as poor blake found out, his bike didnt pass rego (missing some plate for the muffler or something, it was practially brand new, nothing wrong with it), got pulled over, he explained, they said, nope, get off, walk it home..or come back with a trailer..
so i dont know how the cops like to regulate the law, but they can twist it certainly!!
another thing, in NSW u can get temporary rego, eg for a big trip..which we did for the van..u ring the rta, u pay some stupid fee, then u get a lovely yellow rego sticker for the day..and u tell them where your going..
which was good coz we went from sydney-canberra and back again..
but i doubt it would b worthy to get that unless u were in a big trip. stupid rta fees!
