Yes, the strap should be on the outside, like this. Attachment: RH Tank Position.jpg Which begs the question as to why it is like it is. If I were looking to buy I'd be measuring the position of the RH tank aperture to help confirm it is a genuine S body. It's a shame the description seems to be mostly a cut and paste from another car - "... the original spot welds for the flared guards, ...". |

That's not the first time the strap has been fitted that way to a right hand tank. BMC Comps fitted it this way in 1965 to stop the tank sliding into the car and causing a short and subsequent fire due to the tank shorting out the battery terminals. In the event of a loose and the rear of the car hit a bank it could displace the tank.From memory it was Rauno Altonen's car.driving in his first Monte, that provided the impetus to fit the strap towards the inside of the car.It happened when he hit a rock bank causing a fire which totally destroyed the car. At the same time the battery was fitted with its terminals nearest to the spare wheel - furthest away from the tank. A piece of asbestos was fitted to the inner side of the tank as an additional safety measure.When studded tyres were used this asbestos was replaced by a plywood panel glued to the tank. Maybe your car has a rally history! |
