Post subject:  thermo fan

well my mini appears to be heating up a bit too much. The gauge reads 140 degrees all the time but i think it is wrong. I am thinking about installing a thermo fan to help with this. can anyone tell me how to go about finding one and fitting it? how much are they worth and do they help much?
also is it common for minis to heat up during running in? and if the radiator is full nearly to the brim will the excess be sprayed out?

well my mini appears to be heating up a bit too much...they do that :!:

The gauge reads 140 degrees all the time but i think it is wrong....better get it checked or take out the sender and put it in boiling water and see what the guage reads :!:

I am thinking about installing a thermo fan to help with this...won't help a faulty guage :!: is the radiator boiling over :?:

can anyone tell me how to go about finding one and fitting it?...Davies Craig make em...look in the Yellow Pages for their advert :!: remove the existing belt driven fan and follow the firtting instructions that come with the fan NOTING that you want to suck air through the radiator and into the mudguard :idea:

how much are they worth and do they help much?....over a hundred bucks :roll: yep they do a good job :D

also is it common for minis to heat up during running in?..Damn straight :!: and not just Minis :!:

and if the radiator is full nearly to the brim will the excess be sprayed out?
Yep :!: do you have antifreeze/antiboil coolant in there :?:

Not sure if it's normal during the run-in process. But before splurging on a thermo fan, best to see if there is a problem to sort out. Things to look at would be thermostat, radiator (that it isn't full of junk), possibly the carbs - make sure they're not running too lean. There are other areas, but I have a headache now and can't think straight :x

the gauge sender has an adaptor fitted to it as it is to small / big for the hole. i have been told this may give false readings and that the ohms may be reversed or something.

thermostat = tested, working
radiator = brand new
and the carb hasnt been tuned properly yet since the engine rebuild.

yep. this is a good answer because today i was stopping every 10 - 15 mins to check evertything and the first couple of times found coolant all over the firewall. then when it had sprayed out enough to lower the level it stopped doing this.

so where do i get the appropriate thermo fan? it would be the easiest solution, yes?
is there any body mods required to fit one?

What sort of running :?: hope you were on a 80-100 click road so you could give the new engine a run through the rev range....

[quote="64morris"]the gauge sender has an adaptor fitted to it as it is to small / big for the hole. i have been told this may give false readings and that the ohms may be reversed or something.....needs to be sorted...not enough information to say something useful to you...sorry :shock:

thermostat = tested, working ...KAY
radiator = brand new...............KAY
and the carb hasnt been tuned properly yet since the engine rebuild...................................BINGO first thing to check before you melt your new engine :oops:

yeh i was on the highway a fair bit today. up and down through the revs alot. but i was only game to take it to 4000rpm in 4th and about 3-3.5k in 2nd, 3rd is that not enough?

I think that there is a post on here somewhere that shows the pistons fried from running to rich or lean or something along those lines, but the idea would be to go to the local dyno shop and get them to give a tune-up and put the right needle in it

What size 1275 you running?

1310. i have a 42 weber that will be going on soon so is it safe to drive locally with the current carb until the weber is fitted and tuned?

Yeah...seems OK....main thing is to change on the torque curve rather then power curve and valve bounce :shock: and don't let it lug going up hills....just keep stroking it along...the more miles you do the easier it gets...frees up.

yeh i tried to keep it easy up hills. so will this badl tuned carb kill the motor quick?
