Post subject:  Sanding Back - updated!!!

Hi every one.

I'm planning on getting my car resprayed, and the rust removed from the seams. The pannel beater wants to strip it right back, how hard is this to do, if i was to do it myself?
How long would it take?
what would i have to do?
how much do u reckon it will save me?

Any help would be great.
Ryan

I sanded my car back without power tools.. i would not recommend it, there is a lot of work involved. IF you can find an electric sander that does it goood, it would be much better, but you still need heeps of commitment.

If you find somewhere cheap you it mightnt cost that much to get sand blasted, which would probally be well worth it. It might only cost a couple of hundred VS the 50$ i spent in sandpaper and RSI probally developed. the seams should be easy though cause you can just take a wire wheel to them cause they're covered by those strips??

It depends on your work ethic, if you have lots of time and can just stick to doing somthing, it mightnt take that long, but if you are lazy it will take months and probally wont get done carefully.

I used 80 Grit and a sanding board, wet rubbing. The roof gutters were a real pain and i tried paint stripper in them. that was not a good idea, but you can buy plasticy wire wheels for that sort of thing (the mk1 roof gutter is thinner?? and it didnt fit properly).

What have oyu been qouted for respray?

i've been told it would be roughly around $4000, that is only the outside of the car, getting it fully stripped, windows removed, lots of dints removed, all the rust out of the seems, and the gutter, then resprayed. but i have a feeling he will do it or $3500.
i feel as though i am being ripped off, but i have seen there work and its good, there painter one them an award for best smash repairs in oz i think. so it should be good

Four grand for a bae metal respray sounds pretty reasonable to me. you may be able to get it done cheaper but not by very much. If these guys are that good then my vote is go for it. If
you can sand it yourself then you will save a heap cos there's heaps of work involved and they have to charge $40-$50 an hour to make a profit. Just keep i mind that there is a HEAP of work

Probably false economy.
What happens if it gets to the panel beater and he is not happy with the quality of the prep, OR, if you're not happy with his work and he says it's because of the prep YOU did.

You may save $500 by prepping it yourself but it is hard work that will take at least a few weekends. To have it beadblasted or chemically stripped is around $1000 at least - they can do localised work on a rolling shell for Beadblasting (but they normally do completely stripped bodyshells back to bare metal). Chemical dipping is almost always bare shell stuff.

Maybe you could save some money by pulling the interior, windows etc out for them, but I don't think your going to save a fortune by trying to paintstrip it yourself.

Dude 4 grand for all that work is a good price.
Rust removal can sometimes be the most expensive part of it.

:? you all tell me different things

i like makkas advice

Is it possible if i commit an entire weekend to this job to sand most of the big surface areas back, and they can do the final prep?

You could go buy a gallon of paint stripper and do it that way. But the baked enamel used back in the 60s is bloody tough to strip.

mate it depends on the quality of job you want 4000 G is reasonable if the car has some dints and rust
i would go the 4 grand way if i was after a top job and didnt know what to do to prep the car well as said above its possible to prep it and take it to him only to have him have to go over it all again anyways

BEST BET talk to the body shop guy and ask him what he thinks would be best for you tell him your not willing to throw big chunks of money out it and if there is anyway to cut down the expense

I stripped inside of evil in about 3 days. and the outside in about 2 full days. now about 4 weeks worth of small fixes and sanding ... striping is easy.. prep for painting takes time..

Thanx guys, many options there, all i want to do is strip it back, let the pro do all the prep. i just figure that if i can remove most of the paint before i gove it to them, then it will save them time = me money.

get some more quotes, i got a quote for 3 grand that had rust all in the sills. And that was a respray in black 2pac which is the most expensive.
it would be cheaper to reshell it.

if you still want to strip it back, select your repairer first, then ask them what products to use.

you will want to prep it with at least 400-1500 grit
