I've heard that there are 2 different series of gearboxes and engines on the A series. So is this true?

Depending on what you mean by "series" there are many variations in the gearboxes: types of bearings; types of synchromesh; gear ratios; gear change methods; gear teeth shape, etc.
Perhaps you might mean the difference between early gearboxes with synchromesh on only the top 3 gears vs later 4 speed synchromesh?
Early gearboxes had 'A' type gear teeth and later ones were (you guessed it) 'B' type.
Engines went through a similar evolution and change over the production run of minis.

The other way to look at the question is:
direct change gearbox (pudding stirrer gear lever)
remote change gearbox (remote gear lever, and
rod change gearbox (rod change lever)

Dont forget, you can also get
5 speed Helical A+
5 Speed Straight Cut A+
and even an 6 speed box from Italy all in a same casing

Also some 5 and 6 speed straight cut boxes were made by KG Engineering in Melbourne years ago.

Unless Woody_Woodvine refines his question we could be here for a long time....

Series 1 = Manual.
Series 2 = Auto.

How about transverse and inline gearboxes.

I am loving this thread

Well I've counted 8 different transverse gearboxes and 2 inline in my stash. That's without any of the exotic 5 & 6 speeds!
