Hi Gurus. Can someone please help me ID what type of rack my '66 Deluxe is fitted with? I've searched and found a thread that said the Aussie racks have a 7/8" (0.875") shaft and the poms have a 13/16" (0.8125") shaft. Mine measures 0.845".... Do these numbers mean anything?  It's a bit sloppy on the LH end, so I'm trying to buy the correct bush to repair it. Also, what colour should it be painted? Thanks in advance

It's the 'Cam Gears' Australian made rack BMC used just prior to the Australian AYA6001 rack (which is a short version of the Morris 1100 rack). I found its rack bushes hard to get now, you could try Matt Read. PM 'theminiman' on this forum. He's in Brisbane, trades as Readspeed Mini Mecca. Paint it black. |

Thanks Doc. I was going to call Matt, but didn't expect ReadSpeed to be open today. I've read some tidbits online today that suggest some guys have changed the bush without even removing the rack from the car!?!? I have no idea how they may have removed the bush without withdrawing the main shaft first. Mine's on the bench, so I might pull it apart over Xmas and even look at turning up my own bronze bush perhaps. |

I've been reading about these racks all afternoon. Looking at my pic above, and given it has a 0.845" or 0.843" shaft inside, is it an 'early' Aussie rack? It's stamped 762, is that July 1962. Should I bother with it, or get a later Aussie rack with the 7/8" (0875") shaft? |

Later AYA6001 rack is easier, you can get polyurethane rack bushes- Nolathane, or Whiteline. or Supa Bush ( too tight unless OD reduced). |

Thanks for your input doc. I turned up a nylon bush, bought a pinion seal from my local bearing shop and replaced a broken bearing race with loose balls and it's buttery smooth now

Good to hear. I've done many racks over the years, and often found wave washer preload reset by others is incorrect. Too many shims in making the washers flex and crack up. Pre-assemble with as few shims as possible without washers, check it moves lock to lock without binding. Fit washers )( and try again, add a thin shim if binding. Smear shims with Loctite 515 or Permatex anaerobic gasket maker and bolt up. Use 140 gear oil as original, not grease. |
