Post subject: | Installing new rubber cones |
Hi, After blasting and painting the subframes, I'm re-assembling them with all the new bits and I have a question about applying anti-sieze lubricant to the cones. I seem to recall reading an article a while ago that mentioned to apply some anti-seize on the top part of the cone where it contacts to upper part of the tower in the front and also between the bottom of the cone and the hi-lo. I had a hard job getting the old cones out as they were well and truly stuck in the towers as well as onto the original trumpets. I can't see any mention of this in the manuals or a search on here so perhaps I'm getting confused with something else. What do you blokes do - just whack them in as they are or apply something? Thanks for your help. Rocky |

I only have experience with hydro suspension parts but I assume all suspension parts are the same: if you are the one who will have to get them apart in the future, cover all mating surfaces with a good coating of thread seal anti-seize. Workshop manuals don't mention it. Where the cones fits into the subframes and where the hi-los, struts etc fit the cones. Same goes for the nylon cups that fit into the upper arms (front) and trailing arms. Anything that touches something else will get rusted together in time! |

I always put some sort of anti seize between the cone and hi-lo/trumpet as well as on the pin of the knuckle - the top of the cone is probably not a bad idea either. |

Thanks for the good tips Bill and Matt. I hadn't thought about the knuckles and cups. |
