Post subject:  Hard to start - VERY!!
JAM is being a BIACH to start at the moment. Cranks....goes to fire....nothing.....cranks again, goes to fire....seems to idle in 2 cylinders for a few seconds....dies again.....and on and on and on till it fires....then all is fine.

Anyone else get this problem with twin carbs?

Float levels are fine - I did them myself when rebuilding the carbs. New needle and seat in each carb.....both tuned the same.....not sure if they are still too rich (they were big time initially). I took the plugs out and they look very good, although 2 were oily. Looks like oil in the bores too when I shine a torch down there (but it is a fresh motor).

No vac leaks when running either.......

When it's warmed up, it starts no problem.

What sh*ts me is that Pops sat for 5 years and wasn't started, yet he fires first go every time, and I have done NOTHING in the way of servicing him (appart from oil and plugs) :lol:

yep.. I had very much the same problem.. lol
I gave up trying with twins. going for the 1.75"

The only thing I found was to have the choke out. and tip a JUG FULL of hot water over the fuel bowls. started up every time in the cold. 8)

If i did not do that and only just got it started it would run like a dog for ages. cough and splutter out the carbs.. :evil:

Mine seem to be ok atm apart from an occasional splutter if I floor it. If it's a cold morning it can take a try or 2 (gotta change to a preengaged starter). I've read it's best to pull the choke a bit but don't pump the gas at all, it seems to work well for me.
As soon as I can afford it I'm changing to a single or weber, twins are a pia trying to keep them in tune, at least for me :lol:

hmmm...Kev said Barney was doing the same with twins....is it just a twins thing??

(BTW....my sister in law is having twins :lol: babies that is)

I Love my Weber.

2 pumps of the throttle (3 if it's a really cold morning), and it starts first kick almost every time. Bugger all warm up needed and driveability straight out of the driveway!!

Down here in the cold country my Moke just needs a wee bit of choke, let the electric fuel pump run for a couple of secs, one press on the loud pedal, first crank and away. It has an 1 3/4" SU.

I know it's simple, and might sound a little like i'm babying you (lol), but when ya pull the choke out, make sure it's out all the way. I mean, there should be what feels like 2 levels, ya pull it out, then pull it further. My 1275 LS did that same thing, til I was told ya pull it out again!

Probably not the issue, but ya never know!

My choke is sooo damn hard to pull out, I am worried I will snap the handle! :shock:

I had this issue for a while...

Disconnect the choke cable at the carb....put a little light oil down between the cable and cable housing...pull the cable through the housing a few times to loosen it up and get the oil in there...reconnect the cable to the carbs.

You should then be able to pull the choke right out. It should come out about a half inch and then another inch/inch and a half when you pull the choke right out. Your mini should start fairly easy after that.

With my twin carbs, I pull the choke right out, let the electric pump go for a few seconds and usually a couple of cranks over and she starts on the first turn of the key in these bitterly cold Brisvegas mornings 8)

when you guys pump your throttles, have you found that lots of smaller, quick pumps are better than big foot-to-the-floor type pumps? that seems to always work with the minis we've had.

since I fixed my choke I don't pump the accelerator...
prior to that full throttle and quite a few key turns eventually got her started...better half and neighbours weren't impressed tho

It has been extremely cold of the morning, even using the choke mine does not want to start, but then i give it a little push and clutch start and starts all fine.

hmm strange. after this starts all ok.
