How does one tell which is driver & passenger side.

I did it by holding each extension in place. The correct one fits the curve of the guard while the other appears to be twisted and doesn't sit flush with the guard.

they are both the same The best way to install them is to make 4 small rectangular plates which fit inside the mould Drill a 3.5mm hole in the centre of the plates, use a 1/8 metal thread with nut and screw them on .No damage to paint or mould also seal behind mould where the nut is.

Sorry to disagree. But they are definitely not “both the same”.

They are not the same, as Phil 850 said. They have different part numbers.
Unless you have 2 of the same, Winabbey's comments are right. The correct one fits the shape/contour of the panel and the wrong one will only fit flush to the panel if it points in an odd direction.

Mine fit flush and point up on the ends.

Visually, I struggled to notice any difference when comparing the 2 side by side. I thought they looked exactly the same but with 2 different part numbers, assumed there had to be a difference. As others have said, they fit better on one side than the other. Mind you, I had to adjust the passenger side of mine as the guard has had a few knocks and the whisker stuck out a bit.

Fitting wise, I don't think there's any chance of securing the clip to the guard and then pressing the whisker on. I read somewhere (on here or maybe the UK site) about using a small nut and bolt through the clips - -similar to what p7676 said here but using the clips instead of making plates.

I bought a pack of 4mm hex head ss nuts and bolts and filed down 2 opposite edges of the hex head so it fitted tight in the clip. Had to drill out the clip hole as well as the ones on the car. Once the bolt is in, slide the clips into place inside the whisker. Had to adjust the clips a bit so they'd slide inside the whisker as you need a bit of adjustment in order to fit the whisker onto the car with the bolts already in place. Worked a treat.

Normally they slide on...

The new clips are a really tight fit inside the whiskers - they are hard to slide more than an inch at the most. The curved end is even harder.

Light pressure on the curved section so that it expands over the anchoring wings? plus some soap or other lube inside?

I would be interested to see a drawing of these moulds if winnaby has one they should be the same like mini headlights.

I don't have the drawing but can confirm they are not the same, as others have already said on here. When you hold undamaged examples next to each other you can see the difference, although it is only a slight difference.

If they were the same BMC would not have allocated different part numbers. Your mention of the Mini headlights is a good example. The same light assembly, rim, etc. is used on left and right and they have the same part number. The parts book show quantity 2 of the part in this case.
