Just thought I'd be a little comical and inform yous of an Australian Mini I spotted just before Christmas, in Northern Ireland!

I'm just wondering if the owner of this Mini is on this forum, or used to be? He to, is also Australian, and I had a good chat with him. He said he moved to Ireland, from Australia, and brought the Mini over with him. I don't blame him either, it's something else, well, different compared to the usual over here. I asked alot of questions, took alot of pictures and drool alot of drool. Needless to say I voted this Mini my most favourite for 2005 on a few other forums I'm involved in.

The owner, I completely forget his name, was on tour with the Cooper Register boys (UK) and they were doing a round trip of Ireland, something I long to do myself sometime soon.

It's a Mk1 Morris Cooper S as far as I'm aware, did the Aussie Cooper models/name vary much from the UK market?

Ha! And I thought Minis were rare in the land of Aussie before I found this forum! :P

I was actually out on a small Mini run with two other Minis at the time. We travelled half way down the coast, pulled in for some food, then suddenly a load of Coopers zoomed past, and I mean zoomed! We grabbed our half cooked food and give ourselfs a bit of pedal to the metal. We were no more than 2 minutes behind them going out of that town, but didn't catch up for another 15 minutes two towns later!

No idea how he was getting away with no those WA plates on though! This is when I fell for rear window louvre and Australian quarter window doors.

Did the Aussie MK1 have flares?

Mini history is not one of my strong points.

There is another Aussie Cooper S in N. Ireland - a guy from Newry Co. Down (not far from where I live). He has an old english white Morris Mini Cooper S Mk1 with marron roof - lovely car.

This particular one had, what looked to be folded/bent strips of some material around the arch, if that means anything. (Obviously not standard though..)

No road tax disc on the front screen either, must be on some permit or other, but then again, it depends on where this mini lives.. not sure the differences in registration between the North(UK) and ROI.

In the North we have to display a tax disc. In the South you have to display a tax disc, NCT and insurance, all a requirement as far as i know.

The guy either doesn't have them, or they are lying in his back seat! The plate behind the front windscreen looks like an old Irish registration. I think the only way he gets away with it is because he's on a run, and the Cooper Register would be an authentic club that plays by the good books.. But then again, to take part in a run the public liability insurance requires all drivers to be road legal with the needed documents, yaddy da.

Bit risky as they have got very strick in Ireland lately about plates.

Square plates have the meanest look on a Mini, in my bias opinion!

You were in a town about half way between Darren and I. He lives in Coleraine on the North Coast, and I live in Banbridge which is about 6 miles directly south of Lough Neagh (which incidentially is the largest freah water lake in Europe!!)
