Been planning a conversion of my '69 for a very long time and bought a '94 gti along the way and now I am nearly ready to start the conversion! I was hooked after seeing a gti mini with a mark 1 engine, it's neatness, sound and performance.

I am not after turbo charging, high revving or any racing with my car, all I want to do is have a quality, reliable fun vehicle that I can drive with good response, so my objective is to (basically) transplant everything across including the stnd EMU, loom and all the components from the GTI.

I've been reading with interest some of the threads regarding the Mk1 and Mk2/3 power trains. From my understanding there seems to be some differences that may affect the transplant. My biggest concern is the inlet and exhaust manifold....

Most of you have many years experience in this area and I was wondering if you could advise me on the challenges I will face with the mk2 power train... What will not fit and how perhaps I can overcome the obstacles?

Any advice would be appreciated :D

I'm not really 100% knowledgable on the efi differences on these engines as I'm using carbies but you can get these engines in without cutting the firewall.

When I was planning on running injection I shortened my inlet manifold by around an inch, which allowed it to sit inside the firewall no worries. It's easy to do provided you have access to something that can weld aluminium. Also cultus manifolds I think fit well also.

The exhaust manifold generally remains standard for most people as they flow ok, and are quite compact, however, I made mine and it's not all that hard to do and will allow you to use the space in the front exactly how you want.

When your building your frame just loosely fit everything in either a car or mock up front until your happy with how it's all fitting. It should all go in without too much fuss.


I'm no expert but I'm currently building one so comin across all te problems at the moment. Feel free to ask questions!

Not sure how far you are into your mod but did you try fitting the standard manifold in the mini before shortening it (if so how did it fit) and was your donor car a mk2/3 or mk1 as the Mk1 mini I analysed seemed to have a smaller/shorter inlet manifold, hence why my concern?

I am not at that stage yet but thought that if I have to make some mods, now would be the time :)

Btw, do you intend transplanting everything as well or are you going aftermarket EMU and (maybe ) turbo?

My build thread is a few posts down in this forum have a look there. Mines mk3, the inlet manifold was too big in standard form, I think as you say, the mk1 manifold is shorter.. It's not hard to shorten them anyway and if your going to the trouble of doing a conversion things like that shouldn't phase you.

I'm running bike carbies so no ecu just programable ignition. So I've made custom manifolds both ends.

The reverse inlet manifold found on some Mk1 cars will fit without cutting the bulkhead. Alternatively you can modify an inlet manifold to swap sides.

The inlet on a Mk1 is very different to later Swifts.
The Mk1 runs a dizzy, the ECU only controls the fueling.
Also the engine mounts locations on the block are different between Mk1 and Mk2/3. There are more smaller differences (hollow cams,harmonic balancer, etc) but that is the guts of it.

Hi AWD

thank you for the response.

your "swap sides" of the inlet manifold intrigues me as I was Kind of thinking of placing the filter on the RHS (looking in the engine bay from the front) where there is more room.

I have seen a few like this but have all had a custom manifold and planium made up...

can you please provide a little more information on your comment... do you mean i can use the Mk2/3 IM and somehow reverse it to have the air filter on the RHS and I can make it fit?

Sorry AWD, i misread the comment of the manifold.

OK , i need to modify the manifold, still very interested as I would prefer to have the air flowing from the RHS, so would you have some suggestions as to what needs to be done to the manifold to make it fit?

Hi Jason

I have a '94 gti already, not 100% sure if it's a mk2 or mk3 but from what I have read, mk2/3 have the same problem with the inlet manifold....?

So I need to know what I need to do to the inlet manifold to move the intake to the rhs and make it fit in the engine bay without cutting the firewall.

that a mk3 i well be making full kit for gti 89 to 98 in to mini inc 4 wheel disc brakes all you need for diy install

Hey Jason, seen ur work. You do a great job mate. If I wasn't so keen to do the work myself (I enjoy it) I would certainly get you to do my mod for me.

Do you have a photo of the manifold as the YouTube clip does not show it very well?

Thanks Jason, You're a champ.

Does your planium have all the fittings for all the equipment transplant from the gti?

I want to transplant everything over so it is stock with no aftermarket emu etc....
