I STILL own a rotary and have found that its a lot (Read: HEAPS) more reliable than the 1100, then theres brakes for one, there easier to work on not to mention cheaper, the only thing pricey with looking after the 7 is plugs!
I've had no serious problems with the RX7 or the motor, even after 280,000klm's on the same motor, 1 rebuild @ 180,000klms. 8)

A 6 port would make 80kw @ "wheels", as my motor with no porting or exhaust makes 88kw @ the fly with only a K'n'N filter and its a Aussie 4 port. 6 ports make more like 100kw.
The 4 port in th RX7 now will out perform the mini from idle to 4500pm (The 1100's good power band), so torque wouldnt be an issue if i put the motor in a car with half the weight. it would just be scarey in the higher revs!

Fuel Vs Power, a stock 4 port 12A (with how little fuel it chews in comparison) would kill a 1330 with a webber, but people still live with that kinda fuel loss.... .
And Whats so fantastic about a worked A-series,Suzi or starlet conversion? i thought so, it's all been done before. (Not having a dig, just making a point!!)

Ps: efficiency isnt an issue, anyone knows you sacrifice that when you start modifying a car.

If he used a Cordia box it's mounted east/west. As for the `VW adaptor plate' it's probably the one that's used to adapt other motors onto VW boxes- as is/was common in open wheeler race cars & hillclimb specials.

Why only use 1/2 a 13B? Maybe it's to get under the cc limit for a road Mini...???

Sorry Doc, i have a habit of missing details...... usualy the important ones!!!!!!

A well sorted 12a extend port should get 180hp. bridgeport up to 240hp, then fuel inject it for more reliability and driveability. As for gearbox, i think a rotary can be mated to a 88upwards laser(323) gearbox. Only hassel i see would be trying to fit a decent exhaust under the mini to keep it all quiet.

Gilly.. Why do people climb mountains ?

Why am I planning this very conversion for a Moke ?

Why did Phil Donoghue ever quit ?

These are all unanswerables.... I Just want to do it !

Personally, having driven Many Rotaries, (13BT Cosmo, 12A-BP R100, 13B-PP RX-3 and one or two others including an original NSU!) I like the torque curve (or lack of it!) and the weight of a moke would be LESS than an R100 .... and they seem to go alright !

I'm thinking 12A, Cordia / Camry gearbox, FWD Moke....
Add a little weight to get it Legal (Fibreglass hard-top and a few lead-shot bags in the side-channels!), get it engineered, and have some fun at the lights.... not the blazing off at 100MPH fun, but nice, safe, legal "Brap, Brap" type fun....

Oh yea, I'd like to change it to a Bridge Port too....

Not bothering with the IDA COnversion, but leaving it a 4BBL Nikki.. i reckon they are a Top carb !

Reving past 12 just about everyday and doing back fires most weekends...reving it up in first and then and then just releasing the right foot and Bang....down Church st in Parramatta 8)

Relable...I never fixed anything just upgraded..the only car I have done this with 8)

i'm not afraid of rotary's, i have been consistantly faster than all contenders through the twistys, even beaten a few at the lights.

mmm boat anchor putt putt runs on coal A series..

seriously though, i have heard so many times about people attempting this conversion, but i have never seen one that has been completed.

going past 7k rpm is really pushing it, i've heald my car to 8000, takes it fine, but if you do some reaseach on what reving past 6500rpm is doing to your rotor you would stop doing it.

As for 14k rpm, the exageration gets bigger and bigger the further you get away from the actually rotary engine forums.

The realworld limit is about 9k, even for bridgeported engines.

For your mini, a stock port, 12a, with a nice exhaust would probably already be enough to start twisting the chassi. You are talking about an engine capable of making ~75rwkw(130hp at the fly) and sticking it into a small shopping crate.

The reliabilty with my daily driven rx-7 is 2nd to none, yet to fail on me. And the fuel usage isn't as bad as people make it out to be, uses about 12.5L/100kms in a 1100kg car, driven fairly spirited.

I personally love the idea of a rear driven 12a mini

ohh and the torque talk.

OK, do some reading on that too, torque means crap fiddle sticks all at the engine, it gets converted at the gearbox, and then again at the differential, and then again with the rolling diameter or the tyres.

Acceleration is proportional to hp. The only reason people talk about torque is because usually the engine with the good low end torque will also be good at making hp in the lower end of the revrange, but just remember the car can always be geared lower to make up for those sort of problems.

When u put the rotary in u have to do a custom subframe , so while ure down there u strengthen it so it aint a "shopping cart"

Meh... there are already a number of people on this forum with minis that make more horsies than that.

Oh and makka, the monster truck holds the shopping nicely. But yeah in a normal mini would be an effort.
