That scoop looks bloody awesome! Can you reveal what the front scoop part is from? Is it a Subaru Legacy? Apologies if this is posted earlier in this thread.

Have a look at the bonnet of the half cut you got the engine from. I regret selling my bonnet now but ive got something different planned.

I've got an EP82 bonnet if anyone wants it (I don't). I am more than prepared to cut out and around the scoop section. It would have to be shipped (from Perth).

I've had a bit of a think about scoops, as i don't really want to put one on. I spoke to a guy in SA who is running the 4EFTE in a N/A body. I asked whether he has any problems without having air flow to the TMIC and he said he's had no issues whatsoever. So i'm considering not using one - anyone else had other experiences re: no scoop?

I wonder whether he can back that up with eg intake temperature figures?(Air-to-Air) Intercoolers rely on reasonable air flow to greatly increase the efficiency in releasing the stored heat into the atmosphere, so I find it a bit hard to believe that a convoluted air flow path through the engine bay will provide the same cooling effect as a scoop that directs air straight onto the similarly positioned Top Mount intercooler. I expect that without a scoop, the intercooler would get heatsoaked much quicker and stablise at a higher temperature (at around what the average engine bay temperature is) rather than say, 5 degrees above ambient. It wouldn't cause problems, you just wouldn't produce as much power and the ECU would be doing things like retarding timing due to higher intake temperatures (thanks to the intake temperature sensor at the side of the intake plenum).

If you were to retain the TMIC with no scoop, at least give it some fresh air. As an example - the diesel Mazda3 has no scoop and a TMIC but has a dedicated (and sealed) air feed piping from the front of the car to the intercooler

Yeah it made me wonder too. Particularly because the efficiency and power directly relate to the temp difference thanks to one of the fundamental laws of Thermo.

I was thinking at least the bonnet is easy to modify after the project is finished if need be. Probably trial without it and see what happens. Could do the calcs but can't be arsed!

Yes, true.

But mine feeds the oil cooler, which sits in the place of the top-mount.
The I/C is now a front mount with automatic water spray (or will that be water/methanol injection, hmmm...)

Cheers,
Tricky
