wow. going to all the trouble of making up a subframe like that, and still not bumping up to A arms.......

on that note, does anyone make A arms for the mini???

RHS, CHS, SHS... doesn't matter what you use if you're welding is sh1t :D

And on the topic of CHS I have seen CDS (Cold Drawn Seamless) posted a few times. IMO it's not really necessary to use seamless tube. Is this what engineers as specifying must be used???

the quality of the welds doesnt matter to me coz i am just making the prototype :) getting a mate of mine to do the final :) once i get the design all worked out and sorted :)

i wonder how much stress the subframe is under whilst driving on the roads

i mean if the frames a decent design
i guess i cant really picture where the stress is and is it twisting type stress or just the stress of the engines weight or??

i mean just looking at the A series subframe it doesnt seem really strong and rigid

can someone enligthten me

The suspension towers take most of the load.

The rest of the subframe still has to deal with:
a) lateral cornering forces
b) moment on the engine mounts (dependant on engine torque)
c) mass of engine including forces imposed during driving

True the standard mini subframe is not exactly high tech, but it works!
Although the mass of a jap motor is less, you could expect all the other forces to increase. All of the subframes seen on this forum are good lightweight spaceframe design, and should last decades without cracking :)

thanks for that yeah the a series subframe is a good thing

so does solid mounting the engine to the frame help in anyway or does this increase stress as i think i heard mentioned that baracades was solid mounted

Solid mounting simplifies installation - in his case it would be tough trying to find rubber mounts that would withstand the torque that thing will be putting out! Also the motor acts as an integral part of the subframe, just like Formula 1

Most motors transmit too much vibration to do that (unless it's just a race car) but BigBad seems fine. Wouldn't try that with the old 1275

i learnt on stick too...but now i have both and i prefer to use the mig lot's quicker though stick there are no problems not like the mig where the wire will not be feeding half way through the weld every so often..

It's done this way because it maintains the original suspension geometry.

Getting engineering approval for your own suspension design would exponentially increase the PITA factor.
