Yep, you got a bargain alright. Have you priced a big Dawn vice like that? They are pricey.

Abrasive chop saw? I have seen a GMC at Bunnings under $100. That's all you need.

I've heard solar only ones are shite, but that's only 2nd hand info. You know anyone that uses one of these? I've got a standard 'ol BOC mask with a gold lense. $15 for the mask, lense was about $12 from memory, it doesn't really make any difference that I can tell.

Lots? Is this for the jig as well? The subframe itself wont need much, you'd get change out of a 6m length.

i used one when i was learning how to stick weld...thought it was pretty good...sure beats the standard ones where you have to take it off to see anything...

yeah the subframe shouldnt use much...but the jig will use atleast 8m i'd think...perhaps a bit less...i was gonna take a spin out to the metal recyclers out near the gateway bridge...and get 16m of some heavy stuff...not too heavy...but suitable for the subframe and the jig...was looking at 40x40 external with 4mm walls...perhaps 50x50 but that seems a bit too beefy...prolly overkill for the subframe...

They sure make things a lot easier, especially when you are tacking things up.

You gotta be pretty lucky to get decent scrap from those places, but it's worth a look. They have a warehouse in front with all new steel so if you dont find it in the scrapyard get it from there. They always have cool sh1t in that scrapyard too 8)

Wasn't GMC started by one of the Aussie head guy's of Makita after a falling out with them . A lot of their early products seemed to be rip off's of Makita stuff , I remember being in a Bunnings with a builder mate who stripped a GMC saw and compared it with pic's of a Makita one from a couple of years before .

I work in the conveyor biz and we use chop saws a fair bit. The Makita is good, so is the Hitachi, but we have GMCs too.
I burned the 1st one out cutting 10 pieces of 150x12 flat bar in a row, one after another. Motor just got way too hot and the smoke got out of the windings... :P
But Mr GMC gave us a replacement, so good. 8)
We just watch how hard we push these now, but for cutting light RHS etc they are great. Good value, and good enough for home use.

Yeah I let the magic blue smoke out of my GMC 4" Angry Grinder recently.

I guess GMC + high ambient + high duty cycle + wire wheel == burnout.

$15 Orange super crap one has chugged along fairely well 'cept for the dodgy power switch.

Just got a cheap Black & Decker with 2yr waranty for replace the GMC. See how it goes.

Now lets see 10 x 18 months = 180/12 = 15 Years :D :D :D . But seriously I should have probably invested in a chop saw would have made things just that little bit more accurate.

Cheers

Matt

When Makita stuff was made in Japan it was good. I'm a bit leary about buying anything on brand name alone these days. Even some Hitachi stuff (which I used to rate really high) is now made in China.

For stuff like angle grinders I have 1 good one (Jap made Hitachi) for heavy stuff and a few cheapo ones coz I dont like swapping disks etc.

yeah i was a bit weirded out when i saw that my brand new makita drill and angle grinder (both costing almost twice the equiv GMC ones) were made in china...but not all stuff that comes outta china is total crap...its more to do with quality control i find...when i was living in china i was exposed to 1000's of brands that never see this side of the chinese border but that were still pretty good...and besides...all new Buicks and VWs are now made near shanghai :)
