Looking good Tim :D

Subframe looks nice and neat! Is it designed for fitment into a roundie by any chance? Wouldn't mind having a look at your progress at some stage as I'm still toying with this idea  Good luck sorting all the dramas out!

Toying with the idea ay Carl? :)

If I had a spare roundy shell I'd give it a go, but I don't unfortunately. The frame should fit, along with the engine, but anything else...I can't say.

Ever had a good look at Ben's Starlet mini? He says that my engine will sit a bit further forward than his to give more firewall for the intake runners.

Theres not going to be a lot of room up front for the intercooler and radiator, and eventually, air con matrix. If you run a top mount intercooler you can free a bit of room up, but I don't like the look of bonnet scoops so I'm not going down that path. I think it may well be a long nosed setup.

That subframe looks familiar:

Engine sits nicely in it. Plenty (relatively) of room around the engine and box.

Cool.

Rover subframe was an intersting choice, but you bought it off Steve yeah? So I guess he had a lot sitting around. :)

I bought it off Steve who was going to put it in a race car - probably a rover!

I was suprised at how well it fit in the van, (must be pretty straight or at least bent the same as the subframe.) and its not difficult to convert the mounts from early subframe to late.

The engine mount parts of the frame bolt together so it can be fitted without cutting the inner gaurds the only mod to them is the passenger side has to be bent out slighty at the bottom, drivers side gaurd does not need any cutting also with passengers side mount peice able to be unbolted allows the engine to be removed from the top and easier. The only cutting involved is to allow room for a front mount radiator that will run in front of the engine/turbo.
Carl yep could be fitted to a round nose, but the turbo would have to be re mounted closer to engine as it will stick out too far with standard manifold. The radiator is another problem probably mount under boot and intercooler either air to water or top mount but with ducts under bonnet to direct air to cooler with out a scoop (not allowed in SA)

Well the frame does fit. Cut off some of the radiator shorud, as in above pic, cheers 77 clubby van.

Hammered out some of the drivers guard and all fits there. Just need to loosen up the top frame mounts and shift it all around to line up thje front bolts and presto, it's all in.

Then motor goes in. :D

Can I put the motor in without removing the passenger side mounting bar/bracket? Or should I take that out, lower the motor in, then bolt it on?

Much easier to remove passengers side bar/mount when removing the engine.

The easiest way, I think so far, is to lower the engine in without the passenger side mount. then bolt it up once the engine is in position.
I found that you have to tilt the gearbox down under the rad grill to get it in. I couldn't do this with that bar in.

[not sure if that makes sense....its been a long day!! ]

Hmmm, had another look over minimetoy's install into his 850. I suppose mine (well not yet) would be of the same design, just with a water to air intercooler- interesting :D

Are you doing the wiring in of the looms yourself Tim? I've re-hashed small ones before but these look like even more fun!

Brilliant! Some excellent lateral and forward thinking there to have a removable passenger side in the subframe design. Especially for those who have to remove the motor after breaking things and wearing out clutches.

how hard is it to pull out any mini subframe, like can you pull it out with engine attached rather than pulling the engine out the top?

it's a couple of bolts, some wires and a few pipes...

then you can lift the car off the engine and frame/wheels..

10 bolts and they're out...problem with taking the motor out with the frame is clearance dropping it down and mostly with having to lift the car over the whole lot and you have to keep the car parallel to the ground so lifting the front and the back up and over..
