The 1NZ-FE looks OK but the gearbox ratios ruin the damn thing, goes well if you can rev it out but the auto ruins it - find one in a manual and play with the ratios and it'd be pretty good too i reckon. Maybe even the change to 10" wheels would help as they are just geared too talk and the gear ratios for each gear are quite far apart...perhaps look at the boxes that were available that mate to it cause that's all it would take.

I discussed the 1NZ-FE on Toymods and found there were several other gearboxes taht fit it and have different ratios:

From the factory, they use a C150 but with some creativity you can fit any C series box to them, you may just need a C150 bellhousing to do it though. I have a C56 bolted to the standard C150 bellhousing in my Echo.

C150 from an Echo
Bell housing - 128mm
Centre casing - 164mm
End casing - 81mm
Total length = 373mm

C56 from an AE101 Levin
Bell housing - 145mm
Centre casing - 179mm
End casing - 71mm
Total length = 395mm

I stuck the echo bell housing on the C56 centre and end casings and got a total length of 378mm which fits into an Echo with about 5mm to spare. And by using the C56, you get a 4.3:1 final drive instead of the 3.6:1 echo final drive and you can use the more common 8 bolt TRD lsd that is used on Levins, corollas, starlets etc.

According to Wikipaedia the Yaris gearbox is a C50 which is also used in my MR2 and the C150 is used in the Echo.

Thinking about it now I wonder if a six speed from one of the sportier Corollas would fit. Mmmm, six speeds. Yes please!! 8)

They would fit. I have a c160 for my starlet conversion.
I've seen the car rob323 has his glanza box in as well and had a chat to him about it. Pretty sure the bell housing is part of the case, so you need to use half of the case as well.

Six speeds would make the conversion much more interesting and would also mean an Auto donor car is a viable proposition. There are probably ten times as many smashed 1.5 Autos going through the auctions as manuals. But would the ECU then need tricks to fool the computer into thinking the Auto is there and working? Probably.

We are getting well OT now. Perhaps we should start a seperate thread for the 1NZ-FE? :)

Personally, I reckon the .CG13DE engine would be a perfect candidate for what Adam has in mind and if that is what he wants to do then none of us should try and convince him otherwise!

My $0.02! Go for it Adam!

Cheers,
Tricky
