Hi fellas,

I am totally ecatatic today! I started the engine!  yay!!!!

I started it with my bunged up dump pipe but this was only so I could attached the O2 sensor.

I filled the cylinders witha bit of engine oil prior to starting for lubrication as it was recommended in another post.

She was a bit relunctant to start at first... seemed like she was starving of petrol.. I guess the ECU needed a bit of time or something.... but then she revved up fine and white smoke filled the whole back yard! ( the oil :D )
From there onwards, starting was no problem.. half a turn and she would fire up... I'm very happy.. 8 months after staring this project I got it started..

Hopefully another month or so to go... I'll have to on the road!!! :P

Next on the schedule: the proper Exhaust.. will post pics soon

Guys,

I was in touch with my engineer and he said that fitting a FMIC is alright as long as it is something completely out of proportion ( sticks out way more than the bumper or goes beyond the width of the car etc)

I was looking at the intercoolers offered in EBAY... they are ridiculously cheap!.. . has anyone got any experience with these?

I guess for the money paid, you must be getting what you paid for :?

I would love to go for a water-air intercooler but they seem to be fairly $$$

Can anyone give me a rough price for one of them PWR liquid/air units? i am sure someone here has used one of them.

A clubman with a nice FMIC would look pretty sweet though

Cheers

To do it properly you'll need:
Water To Air Barrel ~$400
Radiator ~$3-600
Davies Craig Electric Water Pump $170
Electric Fan ~$100
Water Reservoir,
Overflow Tank
Piping to Manifold and from Turbo $$?
Hoses etc...

Oh and water :P

I was at Japanese motor sport the other day. (I was driving past and decided to stop in, honest!)

They had a nice HKS intercooler that wasn't too wide, for an R32 Skyline.

It looked like it would go right in front of the turbo really well, but might look a little silly on the outside of the front as it has a weird turn on the intercooler, but looked like with a 90 degree bend would go straight onto the standard turbo. That intercooler was $250 you could probably get a similiar one without the weird R32 bent pipe for about the same. And yes it was nice all nice and shiney aluminium.

All the other generic intercoolers in stock were far too big.

Thanks for the replies fellas,

Oh.. the PWR barrel is not looking too bad now interms of $$ :P . I was thinking of getting an aluminium motocycle radiator, kind of long and slender ones which would fit underneath the front bumpr like a FMIC ( obviously much smaller in size!)

i have found some decent sized generic FMIC models on ebay which would fit the front of a clubman fairly nicely I think.. They cannot be too bad!

I'll have to think about this one for a while!

Tricky: I got the package! Thank you soooooooo much for the info. Exactly what I was after... would make my life so much easier!

Cheers!

The cheapest way to do a air/water IC would be to get the complete setup (pump, IC, second radiator) from a donor car e.g. Subaru B4

I thought all the B4's where air to air. Maybe something off an old school legacy or maybe a celica gt4. When I was looking into it there was plenty of those systems complete on Ebay for about $200-$300.

Also, there was a few s 4/5 RX7 coolers converted on ausrotary.

You're right - the water/air intercooler I have is off a Subaru Liberty (Legacy) RS

Hi Pub,

Glad to see you recieved the info, should answer all your questions.

I have attached a pic of my FMIC as a reference. The dimensions of the core is 450w x 300h x 75d. In my opinion, I wouldnt want to go any bigger than this, as it will just get laggy and the turbo will be doing a lot or work just filling the thing up.

Josh' W2A setup is fine for your application - although W2A is more complicated and heavier than an A2A setup, it can take thermal spikes a lot better. Therefore, around town driving (start/stop) W2A is more efficient, but on the track A2A may be more efficient (as seen in the F1 turbo cars and CART/Indy cars).

Consider both, and then weigh up your options.

Thanks for the pics tricky..

Makes me want to fit a bodt kit to mine as well! :D

How is your body kit manufacturing line coming along by the way? :)

Where did you sourse that intercooler from? Looks very much like the ones they sell on Ebay. What do you think about these ones Ebay has? any good for the price?

The size i had in mind was a similar one anyway... but I would like a more slender but longer one for mine. Could you tell me the overall length of your FMIC plz ( from the ends of the inlet and outlet) Looks like it spans pretty much the entire bumper length between the two chrome 'fangs' which come with the stock clubman.

Cheers Tricky

Hi Pub,

I haven't got the intercooler at home atm, its at the fabricators so they can make the front splitter intake to the exact dimensions of the FMIC core. From memory, the overall length of the FMIC including end tanks and outlets was about 600-650mm (as can be seen, it spans pretty much between both bumper mounting bolt holes).

I got the intercooler from Brisbane Motor Imports, as well as engines they bring in performance parts etc. It most likely is very similar to the ones you see on eBay, as most of the FMIC's you see these days are made in China.

I searched a fair bit for a 50mm wide unit, but could not find one that was large enough outside of going cusom which would have been $$$ - so 75mm was the size I had to choose.

The bodykits are coming along, albeit slowly. I should have a mould soon of a very aggressive and efficient front splitter/spoiler to suit an FMIC of these exact dimensions. It will have cold air intake ports as well as brake cooling vents all incorporated.

Stay tuned and best of luck.

Cheers,
Tricky
