Hi Matt,
PM sent, I need to get a front subframe off you very soon for a cleint anyway, so the timing will be fine. Feel free to drop around when you are in the area. Bring the Kombi, so we can talk 1UZFE (thinking about putting a supercharged 1UZFE into a '56 F100!)

Hi Nick,
Nice to hear from you! Well, I try to ensure my standard is kept right up here as much as I can. Yes, there are a couple of new 'toys' in the workshop, with a few more to come to equip me so my outsourcing will be kept at an absolute minimum. This will enable me to keep quality under tight control and limit any quality control issues. Plus, I just love machinery!

So, I need to spend another $5.5k for a lathe and mill, and that should see me out until I start getting into the panel beating side of things, then I will get myself and English wheel, and a planishing hammer. But this will be next year of course.

This is the kind of lathe I will be buying, it will do everything I will ever need I think:

Cheers,
Tricky

that's some nice gear you've got there Tricky.

you've got everything you need for something like this

Image

This is a roll cage I made a few weeks ago. All you need is a TIG, Pipe bender and something to notch the tube with.

Tricky, if you need any help getting a nice weld with the TIG i'm quite happy to come and give you some tips.

Cheers, Cameron

Hey Cam,

How you doing?

Thats a nice looking cage you have done there, very professional. Please feel free to come around and take me under your wing with regards to the TIG. I have never used one before and any pointers or tuition I can get would be greatly appreciated.

PM me and I'll give you my cell number and we can organise an day of welding and beer!

Cheers,
Tricky

P.S. I have a notcher too!

Ok - its a date. Lets organise a day when we can all get together.

Nick, JC, Marc, anybody else want to join in on the soiree?? Should be a hoot!

OK,

Now for some update news. Picked up some 2mm sheet alloy (6067) from my local metal merchant Damo at Everything Metal (btw - if anybody in Brisvegas wants some metal fabrication works done, laser cutting, etc, go and see my mate Damian from Everything Metal at Northgate, he is a such good guy and will do you a good price) to fabricate the air filter box. These were scraps bits, and cost me bugger all.

First step is to cover the whole sheet in masking tape so we dont scratch it and we have a nice surface to draw some lines on. This part will be uper easy if you have a design already drawn like I have, its a simple case then of just trsferring lines onto the sheet alloy. I went one step further, and made a MDF mock-up of the airfilter box, so I know it would fit into the space required.
Image

Now draw out your airfilter box onto the sheet, use a bit of nouse to get the minimum amount on wastage, and the minimal amount of cuts, and the maximum use of straight lines etc
Image

Cut the sucker out. I could have used the plasma cutter here, but because of the masking tape, this was a bit of a silly choice. So, it was out with the jigsaw and a course steel blade. After cutting the sucker out, it was over to the (new) panbrake to bend it all up. You could cut out each individual panel, but becaue I have the pan brake, it is easier for me to cut out whole lengths and bend them in to sides. After 15 mins with the pan brake, this is where you should be (or not, if you dont have one! )
Image

On the weekend, it's out with the TIG to put it all together.

Cheers,
Tricky

TheMiniMan - it's a club car, not too sure what events they go it as it's a clients car. It is a CAMS approved cage tho.

The material is Cold Drawn Seamless mild steel, i'm not too sure what the specific code or name for it is, main hoop is 44.5 diameter and the rest is 38 diameter.

Tricky - I would definatly be interested in coming to this get together and i'll bring my welding helmet.
