Dutchy,

Your vision for this project is commendable, your engineering and fabrication skills breathtaking, and the posting of project progress in the public domain an inspiration to many.

On behalf of the Ausmini community thank you for sharing your work. We all look forward to one day soon hearing that unique Rex rasp as the beast disappears into the sunset.

Well said Doug! 8)

Thanks for the positive feedback and comments.
I get my ideas and inspiration from the mini pics online so why not return the favour.
I have compiled all of my favourite mini options into this project and hope it turns out to be a really fun car to drive and talk about.
Cheers.

Following with interest. Thanks for sharing. I've always loved Subarus and Minis.... this is like having your cake and eating it too!

Dutchy your fabrication skills are just incredible. Fantastic job and loving your work.
Are you working closely with a certifying engineer for registration purposes?
Do you have to upgrade anything else in the car? Eg heater/demister and burst proof door locks and fuel inlet restrictor for unleaded fuel. This last one is redundant really but I had to put it in to get a commodore v6 swap into another vehicle that I did engineered because that clause has never been repealed in NSW.
Do you know yet what the requirements for brake testing are for rego?

Great work mate. I love your videos on YouTube.

Cheers

Neil

Me too. I love both and am now looking forward to the Boxer sound coming from a mini.

Lots of questions.
I discussed with an engineer before I started. I wasn’t going to do it if it couldn’t be road registered.
We sat down and ran through all the requirements including wheels, track width, brakes, subframe, suspension, torsion test & requirements, steering column, seats, ECU, emissions, sunroof, cooling & etc.

Starting with a pre 1973 vehicle meant that I had less restrictions for engineering.
Brake requirements will be the same as any other requirements for roadworthy.
Engineering on the other hand, correct reservoir sizes for the calipers required.
Car needs a heater to demist the windscreen for roadworthy. I have bought an electric one for this as I didn’t want to use the coolant to heat it given the location of the engine.

I hope I have answered all your questions.

Cheers

No point having a fuel filler in the rear when the tank is in the front.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I’m confident that you have done your homework for registration before undertaking this project. It’s very different in NSW and engineering is dictated by the date and power of the engine puts a whole heap of requirements on any engine transplant. Although not the total story basically the adr for the year model of the engine are required for engineering. Minimum wiper speed per minute, collapsible steering column, burst proof locks etc. it’s a nightmare in NSW.
Cheers
Neil

Yeh it’s different in each state.
I had a 1988 Rover mini that I put a Vtec in which had to also meet the engines ADR including emissions.
I was going to use this mini to convert the WRX engine into until the engineer said it wouldn’t be possible. Too many restrictions with a 88 car.
So I sold it and bought a pre 73 as suggested by the engineer. Glad I did in the end as it has been completely gutted. My last one was fully restored and too good to gut.

Summer had taken over and the MiniWRX got minimal attention.
I have still managed to get a few things done.
- Engine went back in with custom driveshafts
- Seats repositioned
- Gear shifter and linkage made. A video of the detail is here: https://youtu.be/hAYm3u3hlwY
- Coolant pipes installed
- An extra cross brace was installed for the engineer
- Firewall frame in
- Exhaust made.

All in all it’s coming along slowly. Still heaps to go.

Brilliant work 8) Just wondering if there are plans for a "scatter shield" behind the seats? and maybe an engine cover of some sort? :D

Yes there will be a firewall and the frame will be covered in too.
Still working on the top cover as I’d like it to be clear for viewing purposes
