Well finally got the driveshafts back. I am pretty happy with their work even if I wasn't overjoyed at the price tag but by all accounts it was ballpark. So these should go in on the weekend. I have also started on the alternator mount, which hopefully should also be done this wkend.

No mano they are the old Starlet driveshafts. They simply turned the fat one down to match the Mini driveshaft diameter and then put splines on both the shafts after having measured and cut them to length. The thinner starlet shaft (in the middle) is almost the same diameter as the Mini item so did not require turning down.

Yeah Black the driveshafts are one of the big ticket items, with the engine in and the shafts in place you are almost there the rest is nuisance staff like loom, alternator etc. Spot welded the alternator bracket last night so come the end the of the weekend that should be mounted!

Now I just have to sort out the intercooler which is proving to be the trickiest part...

Matt..do you have the original alternator belt tensioning device/adjustment somehow included.... :?:

From your description of those driveshafts they should be quite stong...stronger than the originals maybe (less lever length)....

Is the bottom one in that pic the old mini?

How good an idea is it to simply turn down the toyota shafts! Assuming of course they weren't on their way out. Sounds much easier than mating the two up. How much wasit Matt?

Bungholio, they cost $550 all up. They had a fixed price on splining which was $198 so they only charged me and extra hundred to measure them and turn them down (the other $50 came from GS effing T). More than I thought but still a good price. And yes the one at the bottom is the old mini driveshaft. As for strength I don't think I will snap these in a very long time...

As for the alternator the standard adjustment bracket will be used similar to the one used on the mini item. No belt tensioner on the Starlet. Once it is done and installed I think you will get the picture...

Cheers

did they heat treat the splines? thats one of the major probs with doing the job here in WA.. most people dont heat treat afterwards.. which makes you rip all the teeth off under high load

Weakest part of any Mini driveshaft is the inner (2nd from end) circlip groove, at the CV end. Competition S ones in UK had a stop ring welded on there instead, to avoid notching into the splines.....

I have always been told that heat treating is only necessary if you have previously had to heat the steel to work it. I am pretty sure these guys did not heat my driveshafts to put the splines on. And given that the driveshafts would have previously been tempered this is not necessary. MiniVan the full process of professionally heat treating (annealing, hardening and tempering) is quite an involved process requiring a specialised furnace if you want to really do it properly, which is why alot people don't do it.
