Post subject:  Turbo position

Well after spending days looking and wondering how I am going to make it all fit, I've positioned the turbo.

The idea is that the exhaust manifold will be made from pipe fittings called 'els' and straight pipe. I have a dozen 90 bends and a dozen 45 bends 34mm ID. I intend to have 4 equal runners of approximately 350mm which will then join into a 52mm ID collector. The collector will be approx 200mm long and join into the turbo.

My biggest issue seems to be space at the front of the engine to fit all the equal length runners in somehow????

Here is a pick of the turbo position.

The other good news is that the headlight clears the alternator by about 8mm and thats with the headlight tags bent over.

Looking good Dan. That is a pretty good position especially as the run to the intake plenum will be almost direct. Also I have about the same measurements for the headlight

Is there any room for the dump pipe?

Brad,

Yeah, I have about 130mm from the back of the turbo to the firewall, its tight but should work.

Thanks Matt, looks like you are almost there, I'll have to drop in again in the new year.

Dan,

There definitely isn't the room up front using the standard headers? I posted a pic a while ago of a bloke from NZ who had successfully done it. My intention was to do it this way also. I understand it will only require some minor shaping of the front aprin and using an external wastegate in order to do away with the wastegate actuator that seams to protrude a fair way.

Where are you going to run the dump pipe? Same route as Dean's?

Looking good.

Yeah, dump pipe will run the same route as Dean's. My only concern is the heat melting things, I'll have to wrap the manifold and dump with a bandage to prevent this.

Yeah Dan come on over by that time it should be turning over hopefully. Also at 130mm that's 5" how big a dump you gunna run. I ran a 2.5" all the way, but obviously from the front of the engine. Also put me pod in last night, just gotta work out a way of securing it. Top rad hose also sorted.

Matt,

I am going to try and run a 2.5inch (the 5inches should give me just enough room for the bend) from the dump to the underside of the car and through to the muffler.

Not sure if I will do the full exhaust myself, I probably will do the dump pipe and then get the rest made???

Also the feed into the intercoooler almost lines up so I'll rotate the inlet on the IC and run a pipe along the front of the IC and kink it to the turbo.

I also tried the bonnet last night and guess what? everything fits under the bonnet (very similar to yours Matt), so i will only need to put a mild scoop in to direct air over the IC.

It's all good.

my mini is standard, but my exhaust is just a straight pipe, font to back with a muffler at the very back.

You would do the same just with a cat wouldnt you? exhaust would be the easiest part I would have thought.

the part of the exaust he is doing has to find its way from the top of the box to under the car with very little room plus mandrel bend for good flow(not easy) after that its easy to the back of the car

Guys,

Your right, by the time i stuff around with all the bends etc I may as well do the straight run, I just hate lying under the car trying to work upside down.

Dan I feel your pain. I spent 4 or 5 weekends under there doing the dump and the exhaust but she's in and done! As the other say the dumps the hardest part if you get that done the rest is easy(er).
