Post subject:  Mini Conversion

Hi all,

At the moment I got an offer from a church friend of mine for a rolling clubby shell for 500bucks. This includes all the other parts (including the original engine + gearbox in good condition etc...). Everything inside is removed except now it's sitting on its wheels.

Since 1993, it has been stored in the garage/shed from the previous owner till my friend bought it at around 1998. He then take everything out and have it fully resprayed for 3-4Gran. After that he put everything back in and has it running on the road in the original engine for 1-2 years until he stripped out all the inside components again and store it in his garage till now.

The shell has been stripped, panel beated, and fully resprayed in the color called "Night fire" in 2PAC. No rust, body straight and no bogs except for the use of very small dents. He claims sound deadner / rust protection as a total job had been done to under the car and under the carpets isntead of painting.

So I reckon this would be a really really realyl good and attractive buy. And it sounds too good to do a conversion and put a newer engine(e.g Honda VTEC, Startlet) in there.

However, one downside is that I don't have that much time to spend like some of the guys here do (like sourcing parts and stuffs, etc...can only do simple things...) as my IT job will take almost all my full concetration and time to learn new things. And another downside is that I dun have much car mechanical knowledge like most people do here say liek for conversion.

Lately I heard that a guy called MrEnforcer can do a complete job for you until the car is completely drivable. I dunno if that's true and has anyone done anything with him like that before with the scale of work that covers a whole complete job.

I am looking to spend around 15-18grad (or lower), would that be something possible to achieve? and can it strictly be limited to that amount? I actually won't think of doign something like this before, but the shell at offer is too good and too tempting...though he has a place to keep it now and not in urgency to sell it.

If anyone had done one up for themselves (and runs for a while with no conversion problems) and can do mine up at a $$cost$$, please also let me Know.

Thx,
Ben

Mr Enforcer will do the complete conversion for you, but i dont know about the interior and such... It will all add up very quickly if you were to get someone to put the whole thing back together. But Enforcer will do a drive in drive out type converison

Hi nay_001,

Thx for posting.

1) Why would you sell it if it's all your hardwork? I reckon anyone will try very hard to defend their cars that they really like unless they really need the money for something else. Are you having ur eyes on something else at the moment?

2) Can you put up some pics with some more specs and performace (or links of your pics) to your 64 Deluxe?

3) How much will I need to pay for the engineering certificate if I put this car away for a year or 2?

4) How much is the insurance? e.g. CTP, 3rd Party for property, comprehensive for your area for this particular /[type of] car. Please specify the area too.

5) How long have u had the car since you got it on the road? And has all the conversion problems been rectified?

6) I assume you did a professional job for the body work of the delux. If so, where have you taken it to and how much was it? Were they paid to do eveything from top to bottom? I.e. Paint Stirpping -> panel beating -> painting. Also, were you able to tell me if they did the right thing (not bogging). Was it in 2PAC? Just give as much info here as possible.

7) Instead of buying a more expensive shell as a package (ie. yours becus I assume you spent quite a bit of money for it), would it be right to say I could save a lot more in the panel work and spray painting job if I were to pay 500 bucks to my friend for everything including the shell and the engine and all the rest he striped out from the shell?

Hope it's ok.

Thx heaps,
Ben

I think I can handle something simple like the interior as it wouldn't take up much time in comparison with the other things.

But when you mean "Interior", do you also refer to correct laying of the wire and looms of the dash and the mounting of it inside the car too?

The drive in drive out means you give them the shell, the 1/2 cut engine, the windows (maybe the brakes and wheels too i reckon), then they will put eveything together without u worrying at the back? cool if that was the case.....I will find it out from them wat they needed to come in with the shell...Nice.....

You were saying about the adding up could grow quickly. So the cost is something you know as u go or something you can actually know about in advance? like Enforcer will tell you the whole job price before they take it up on their shoulders? But nevermind I will ring them and find out soon.

Thx...
Ben

Why did your friend strip it after it was put back together and sprayed?

I would be hard pressed to take someones word for it when they don't have pics to back it up.

You can easily go over that budget if you don't want something basic. I suggest you list what you want and you can get a quote and a fair idea on price. I would always leave a buffer of $5000 from you MAX limit you can spend just in case.

Thx,
Ben

Hey Josh,

Didn't get a chance to ring Enforcer today. Work Work work :(

Mini Mad wrote:

I think he said he wanna restore the engine and everything in one go and becus I think he cannot find time to do it himself and want a MX5, so he decided to sell it

I think he has been a Christian for a long time so I kinda felt/guess he won't say something contrary to the fact.?? But will ask more to see.

So how much did it end up for him? ANy idea?

As you know I am not a super bright person with the mechanical side of things (besides taking related exams in uni or high school) as time is something luxury for me as I have just started my career not so long.

So..Hmm....I reckon it would be a bit difficult for me to pinpoint specifially what I want...but in general, I think I am looking for a basic setup which can allow me to have a car to use (and enjoy) about 3 times a week (or more) to work or to go out:

1) a Honda VTEC engine (dunno if it's a good choice).
2) set of ok front disc brakes (maybe for the back as well as I dunno if people have disc brakes for the back for conversion as well?)
3) 2 pairs of sexy wheels (maybe 13 inch), pretty much like ur one Josh or Marlene (Monster Mini) 's one.
4) some standard seats (basic will do)...well i have got the original seats from the shell which I can upholstered or just use it as it is.
5)Basic trims.
6) Extensibilty/scalability in terms of the ease to accomodate an upgrade that will add more performace to the car e.g. turbo...or something even more extra like brake booster..air-con..etc.. However, not sure what 's the extra things that could gain the perfomace besides the turbo .....maybe Nitro??.

Thanks
Ben
