I'm thinking of doin the mini vtec conversion.

It is possible to to use a clubman, fit eh subframe and use a roundnose fliptop hood??? Do you still need to extend it?

I dont see why this wouldnt be possible, both frames are virtually the same right?

In the car's themselves the frames are exactly the same from roundie to clubby from the factory.

What frame will you be using for VTEC? Will you be buying it? Making your own?

From all the conversions off the shelf that i've seen you would still need to extend the front the vital few inches, even with a flip front.

I have seen a VTEC roundnose without a stretched front with a modified intake manifold.

probably use the allspeed kit.

i've read that their kits dont extend the front...

the reason i ask this question is:
1) most write ups talk about using a roundnose-roundnose conversion or clubby to clubby... they never talk about conversions
2) a clubby is heaps cheaper
3) there are heaps of clubby's for sale

Be careful with some kits as they are LHD ONLY and the B16 diff fouls on the steering rack here which will cause major headaches.

Clubbies also have:
a) generally more rust
b) also have feelings too.
c) at the end of the day it'll be a half cast child

Also VTEC is quite rare over here, i havn't seen one on the road or heard of one registered. Some race cars use them though.

Also fitting it in a roundie will depend how much $$$ you have you can do anything with enough $$ ;) and by the sound of your posts by wanting the cheap way of getting a roundie you don't want to spend to much, but be careful, double your budget of what you think it's going to cost, especially if paying someone to do it.

money isnt too much of an issue. but if i get the same result using the cheaper method wihtout sacrificing quality then why not.

i been seeing alot of great condition clubby's for sale recently.. it just got me thinking...

The VTEC conversion I was refering to without the rhinoplasty was a homebuilt conversion and it was left hand drive. The owner said he modified the intake manifold so he could get the engine more proximal to the firewall. From what I've read here about the difficulty fitting a VTEC to a right hand drive vehicle because of the steering rack I assume that fitting the engine more posteriorly that this would just make the situation more difficult.

The round nose panels are physically shorter than a square front, which gives you less engine bay to work with. A smaller suzuki engine has no spare room under a regular round nose, so squeezing a in VTEC there will be almost impossible (unless your extractors are fitted outside of the grille  )

I'm not sure if the Suzuki you were refering to was the turbo 3 cylinder I am running or the DOHC 4 cylinder, both of which are tight. But I know a particular left hand drive round nose Mini (I know they have shorter panels than a clubby) that runs a VTEC without lengthening the front at all with the exhaust behind the grill and without a flip front. Yes it is tight, but the engine bay looks less busy than my turbo 3 cylinder. So obviously it can be done. So I think the thing that needs to be determined is whether or not it can be done with a right hand drive Mini.

i understand there is more room under the clubby front to fit the VTEC without the need to extend it... but i'm gonna chop off the front for the new subframe anyway...

i plan to use trumpets to save space and all me fit the engine further back... gonna need lots of foam and sound deadening.

Yep, LHD cars are completely different..... was only referring to RHD cars as per our "RHD Mini only" situation in Australia.

But if somebody wants to do a LHD conversion, I have a genuine LHD Rover steering rack for sale (not one of those upside down jobs - they dont work when theyre upside down )

i have heard of the allspeed subframe, it fits a standard roundy front. im thinking of doing one ive got enough money (they cost heaps). I reckon i'd go the flip front on a roundy.

there is a RHD B16 roundie in Melbourne that is in the process of being converted for registration. No front extension, the manifold is being shortened.

It must be a tight fit in a roundy without extending because in my clubbie i just have enough room for the radiater and thats because clubbys dont round down towards the front of the nose.
But anythings possible if ya got $$$$$$$

Good luck with it, http://www.16vminiclub.com is a good site for Vtecs if you have'nt been there already..
