Post subject:  Performance times

Hi Guys,

I was wondering who could point me in the right direction or answer some questions.
Love the idea of high powered Jap engine in light weight mini. Every ones conversion stories are great and I have only just skimmed the surface. What I am struggling to find is performance times. You know the usual stuff, 0-100, 0-160, 400m, 1000m, top speed. Correct me if I am wrong but doing these conversions is all about performance right? Im not talking about those few out there that have 400hp+ turbos on there starlet engines either, just the straight out of the box conversion.
So what is the best coversion to do per dollar spent? Whats your thoughts people?

Thanks,
Jamie

All about performance...........................

What about reliability, economy and less weight?

Not to mention being able to run on ULP with no worries, and having 5 speed gearbox.

Performance, nah, just an added bonus.

Cheers,
Tricky

Well i sold my 4efte powered mini for 12 grand, it was a stock standard 4efte, stock top mount cooler, stock ecu with a T25 turbo bolted on.

It did a 13.8 1/4 mile at 106mph, best mph i did for the 1/4 was 108.9mph, if it was a light rwd car it would be high 12's at that mph. My mini had about 140hp@wheels when i ran it. It did make 169hp@wheels but i never ran it at the strip with that power before i sold it :(

This was done with cheap SIME tyres nothing special in full street trim.
Traction is a big factor when trying to get good performance out of a fwd!

Top speed well thats anyones guess, i had mine off the dial (only went to 180kph) and it was still pulling like a steam train...see pic.

Thats not bad at all, thanks for the reply. Yes you are right, that Mph does indicate a 12.
I can imagine traction would be the biggest issue with the 4efte, good car for the money.
Has anybody got any times with a B16a or has anybody done a B18a conversion?

I'm interested in the BA18. Went around looking at various front cuts and jap engines today. But didn't ask much about Honda motors.

I did get offered a Mazda Familia turbo AWD engien and diffs and everythig, now that would be fun! But nah, staye FWD for the moment, but grip would no longer be an issue with AWD.

If traction is a big issue, which i know it is. Less weight shouldnt be that much of an issue, if you keep loosing weight the more the wheels are going to spin. It will be the suspension and wheel and tyre combo's that'll fix the traction issues. I have heard alot of people trying to get their cars lighter to get better time. A lighter car might get a better top end speed but you will loose all and more in the start when the wheels light up. Being front wheel drive there is always going to be a traction issue.. I have seen braces on front wheel cars to try keep the front wheels on the ground, kinda like a wheelie bar

depending on how much HP you have will determine what sort of traction dramas you have. I have around 95hp at the wheels and used to have big dramas with traction, (shitty tyres) was spinning into third gear at the drags. track conditions weren't the best but still.
I now have Yoko A539's. cant really spin second anymore and as long as i dont jump on the loud pedal to hard in first it stays very tractable.

Weight shift is big problem with FWD. decent suspension and good tyres is best combo.
subs and stereo in the boot wont help. i took almost half a second off my time removing a sub and box.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, I thought a Mini was designedt to be driven, not as a life
support system for a sterio.

Haha...
When you read Hot Fours etc specs they pay more attention to Da DoofDoof than the motivation. And, NEVER any performance times...

Mind you, they just tested one of the top drifters cars over here on the strip - after some fiddling they got into the 9's (just). Nice to see SOME of them can judge performance properly. You're right though, it's usually the size of the rims and sub.
Hey where's this thread gone......

4EFTE powered mini I reckon:

0-100 = 4-5 seconds should be OK
0-160 = Not really that relavent. Only good for the first blat off the start line maybe to the first corner.
400m = 12-13-14 depend on power output and suspension set up. Bear in mind that minis thrive in corners....
1000m - That's a pretty damn long, straight bit of road.
Top speed - The mini, by its design, is limited to a touch over 200 kph. The top speed of your vehicle will depend on how much you increase/decrease the frontal area (wide tyres, wide flares, body kits will not help but they will make you look fast when its parked). Wide tyre will reduce top speed but will increase stability and traction.....

I have to disagree with Gordo. It simply defies logic to think that it would be easier to move a greater mass. Losing traction? Apply the right foot a little more gently!

Shitzer!

What kinda hp at the treads are you talking? I thought 7 seconds would be about right for about 100hp ATWs.

But with around 160hp at the treads I dunno..... That's be scary!

Should be fun 8)

With 140HP ATW Brad was getting around 5.5-6sec 0-100

Interesting, it appears to me now. That for straight, off the line acceleration power is not the issue, traction is.

Whereas, on standard-ish 1275s, traction isn't an issue with decent tyres, power is.

Now I'm very much looking forward to the end of year 12 holidays.
