Post subject:  body-shell options

Guys,

Looks like I have no choice but to wait to do my track test for rego.. which is looking like in August!   NOT HAPPY!

Now this has given me the opportunity to do the outside as I always wanted it.. de-seamed clubman shell with modified sports pack arches.

What are people opinions as to how I should go about this??. I want to start off with a separate body-shell and build it ground up..

I am considering buying a second hand shell and stripping it, sandblasting, seam welding, cutting out all the rust etc etc ( much like what Tricky has done)

Then I heard you can buy brand new body-shells but they cost an arm and a leg :?

What I do want to know is.. how do I go about minimising future rust problems?? How have you guys done it???
All your shells seems so nice and rust free! :P

Cheers!

You can get the "Heritage" body shells from the UK (as per the brochure below , they are a UK type clubman with internal hinges and bigger windows) but would be expensive and difficult to freight but also the fact they are a new shell without a body number/VIN could cause hassles . The other problem is you can't have an engine older than a certain age (is it 18 months ?) in a new body shell for emissions laws . You can use a new engine in an old shell but not vice-versa . Best way would be to chat to your relavent rego authority and find out the full story before getting your hopes up .

thought it might cost a fair bit..

in that case.. i'll get another body-shell and re-do that one..

what do I have to ensure gets done properly in order to minimise rust in the future??? is galvanising the whole shell an option??

Cheers

According to the MiniSpares (UK) site, a new Heritage shell (Mk7) is 3300 UK Pounds  Plus shipping...

How's 10k sound in the end :? I think you'd be better off getting an oz shell and doing it up.

That is absurd! get an aussie one for half that then spend the rest doing it up :)

Good luck registering a Heritage shell here without a VIN, you would be in the same boat as the new Choke shells. :?

Would it be legal to 'reshell' a oz clubby into a new repro shell?

You need to have that original VIN stamp and plate - period.

And if you're caught transferring it from another vehicle you're up that certain creek without a paddle in a barbed wire canoe as they class it as rebirthing .

Anyway , back on topic , the only real option is to use an Australian shell that's in good condition or rebuilt to good condition .

My mate restored a mini matic, the ID plate had fallen off or somthing and the car was Viewed by the police and was given a new number,(had number plate history) I also had a mini with a round nose front on a clubman rear, the VIN plate was moved (was put on the inside of the gard???) but anyway when i went to register it rather than putting the vin in the system they wrote (NO Number recorded) easy as pie, i ended up finding the vin after i striped the car to restore. Would it really be that hard...... obcourse the alternative is reberth (but how much of the car is changed before it is clasified as reberth?... I mean what if the rad shrowed started rusting, etc.

I know of a Mini-K that was reshelled many years ago when near new (BIG accident), the VIN number of the car now is the part number of the shell (stamped on the rad shroud).
So, you can't use that number...

it sounds to me that it would cost the same amount or cheaper, just to buy nearly every panel new from heritage and weld them in
