Not sure if this is the right spot for this....

Hello,

I have a roundnose mini (MK1 /1965) that i am doing a full rebuild on.It has a 1275 cooper s mk1 block and a remote change gearbox from a standard mini (4 synchro).

I am looking at doing the twin cam conversion but using Yamaha R1 carburretors instead of fuel injection and have heard that if I do this the bonnet will need to be modified as the carbs will be too long for the standard bonnet.
Is this correct ?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated !!

Thanks

Designer, yes from what I know if the head has the intake facing the front of the car the installation of carbies will most likely go "through" the bonnet, especially on a roundie as the bonnet slopes down increasingly at the point where the carbies would project through. It is a little difficult to say for sure as I have not seen a BMW head conversion, but alot of the other 8/16v heads with carbies I have seen have big bulges out the front. This is not gospel but what I know/hear.

Cheers

Matt

Hi Designer......

I think both will protrude. Carbs, definitely will protrude past the bonnet line, even the flatslide Mikuni's. EFI with short intake runners on the quad throttle bodies might just fit inside, but I doubt it.

Matt, eaht do you reckon??

I`ve run my twinky with the std BMW Quad throttle bodies , with short ram tubes & foam socks & it all tucked inside the bonnet of a round nose no problems
, i ran it that way for nearly a year, , , now we`re turbo injected with plenum chamber & single 2" throttle body which still all fits in nice

carbs are a different kettle of fish tho, unless you can make extreamly short manifolds & extreamly short air filters (which i wouldn`t recomend anyway)

One possible way around it is what i have done (but not yet used) is make up a plenum chamber to take a single carb on the end of it,,,, it`ll work & it`s a cheap way around getting it uo & running, (carb sits over the clutch end ) it`s easy enough to make & will do the job

What size carby would you use for that set up Matt?

Side draught Weber (like DCOE 40, 45 perhaps)?

yeah i reckon either a weber or an SU should be fine,,, the fule mix is all gonna get smashed around anyways as fuel does in nearly all plenumn types, so that`s all good too, but it should just work straight up easy enough hey
