I have just broken the golden rule

I now have 3 projects on the go at once

I know i should do one at a time and actually finish one
before i start the other, but i just could'nt help myself

I'm waiting and saving finances for the weekend toy which
is so close to finished its not funny

Image

While waiting for the money i decided to pour some labour
into my panelvan (in members gallery)

And 18 months ago i started a new job only to find another mini
nut in the fold who has a very nice 63 850 .so we hatched an idea
to buid a starlet powered hillclimb car
We picked up a motor for $500 and went looking for a mini.

We found this little beauty,it has had a ding on the right had side
but not bad,it's got a fibreglass front that was half fitted by a previous
owner (and rough as hessian undies)

I have had to store the car at work because neither Dave or myself
have room at home for it, I was going to bring it home when i finished
the sedan but we have decided to stay back on our half day off and do
the majority of the build at work.

The car has sat in the corner of the workshop for about 8 months
We have decided to start the project and get things moving.
We through the car up on the hoist and it's in amazingly good condition

Well a little bit of progress on our half day

We pulled the motor out, gee dont they come out easy with no front
on the car

And an empty engine bay

Image

We also put the front subframe in the jig and have cut out the side panels of the subframe

Image

I have seam welded all the subframe towers but have'nt finished yet

Motor is just sitting in there for a look and to save space in the workshop

Hope to have the spars of the subframe done next week so we can
look at bolting the motor up

:D yep i'm taking 2 weeks off shortly to finish it

THEN WE CAN PLAY mind you took it for a test drive yesterday and it's
a bit of a handful ,i hav'nt got the front end set up yet which i'm hoping
is the problem or it's those 13x7's because you car was a lot less
agressive than what mine is

Those 7 inch wheels on the front certainly could be contributing to off handling.
Maybe you should try and get some 13 x 6 superlites for the front.
You can use the same tyres, but the front track will be that little bit less making life easier in the cockpit. :D

Hi Harley
I went for the 13x7s for more traction but it still breaks loose
quite easily, Handling is still good but i'm getting a lot more torque
steer than when i drove James's van,so hoping it's the front end setup
as its all adjustable, i'll get it done and see how it goes

Get a good alignment done and you should be better off. It made a heap of difference with my car.
Mind you, I haven't driven one with 13x7s, so I can't say what to expect with them.

Hang in there. If the alignment won't fix it, 12" wheels are cheap and just grab some semis to help in the grip department.
We can even try my wheels 1st to see if that helps things.

I'm thinking a set of black 12x6 mambas with A048Rs from midland wheels in the UK would be the go! 8)

i went from 13x6 [A048R] to 10x6 [A032R] and the 10's handle much better than the 13's, more grip in a straight line too.

Hallsey,

Simply Red looks AWESOME!!!

You have done a steriling job of that conversion - kudos to you Ol' Sock!!

I think you are a bit like me, need to have 20 things on the go at once!!

More shots of 'Simply Red' please.

Oh, and I am sure the hillclimb car will turn out to be just as awesome!

Cheers,
Tricky
