Hi This might have been asked but has anyone put a honda ZC engine into a mini? This was out of a a civic or crx. What could be the reasons for not using it?? Cheers |

A quick skim through Wikki seems to be it's a slightly "different" engine as any other D/B series engine (I didn't see anything about exact differences so it may just be same block different tuning accessories). But I'm assuming if it is just like the other Honda engines their is no reason why you can not swap it but....generally "V-tec's" are a lot heavier, harder to squeeze in, wheel track can be a problem and because of these issues a little more skill is needed when installing them. If it's a different block or something like that parts could be an issue, a plain old B16 or something could be a better option if your keen for Honda V-tec power. Also because it's a bulkier engine your more limited to N/A where as a starlet, swift (old or new), Getz and most of the more recent small hatchbacks with small size engines may be easier to install and you may have the option for forced induction which could give you more power than a std V-tec. |

Best of the D-series IMHO. The Z6 is on par because it has VTEC, but only SOHC, while the ZC has DOHC. No as hi-po as the B-series but you can get some really decent horsepower out of them with bolt ons. Also, longer stroke than the B-series so not as quick revving or as high. Dedicated D-series site here: http://www.d-series.org Some really good aftermarket support for the D-series too - most bits available off the shelf. I had one, sorry I got rid of it now. So in summary, reasons for not going down that route? None really. The only problem I can see would be the lack of popularity for this conversion, so less bolt on parts availiable. Should be cheaper than b16, only issue being the b16 has a wider power band due to vtec yo! |

ZC is out of early CRX and is pre VTEC. Nice little engine and as tricky said is a D series. I know a few people that have put hem in early civics (74 model) Can run carbies if needed too makes for a simpler swap. Cheers, Dicko. |

Cheers for the info. I hav seen an engine gearbox and loom with driveshafts for 150 bux........was thinking if it might be a good start point to try alternate engine in a mini?? Will look a little harder at it me thinks. |

I wouldnt look any further than the D!! The D16ZC was, for its day, the hi-po engine from the Honda stables, and they were just starting to introduce VTEC at this stage. Standard, they did something like 134BHP with PGM-FI (fuel injection). All ZC's were EFI. There are a plethora of aftermarket parts availabe for them, heaps in fact - from cams, to intakes to EM etc. With the right bolt-on's, I cant see why you cant get 180bhp reliably out of them. Being DOHC too, allows for a wider range of tuning over SOHC. The heads breath reasonably well, and are restricted mainly by port size, which could easily be opened up. For $150 denero's, why would you pass it up. Simply, they were just overtaken by the razzle dazzle of the B-series VTECs and got lost in time. I think for that money, and some bolt-on's, you would have a awesome platform!! Plus, they are lighter and smaller dimensionally than B-series and easier to install. Gearboxes are smaller too but not as strong, which wont matter to much in a mini. I know of some guys in the US who have successfully turbo'd them to achieve 550-600hp!!! Normally aspirated though, 180hp would be more than enough in a brick - and, its a light-year ahead of what you have now!! There is a guy who is running a ZC in a dark green roundy I think! I would not hesitate to pick that ZC up for that price! Cheers, Tricky |
