The 3d model really helps bring it into something tangible. Amazing computer work!

Love the 3d models are you going to do a model with it sitting in the engine bay to see what interferes and what has clearance ?

Thanks for the comments guys. :D

I got the majority of the steel I need to build this thing on Friday.

Laser cut parts........
Image

Which I then bent to shape......

The quality of the cutting is incredible. The holes don't need drilling, the edges dont need de-burring or anything, its ready to use from the time you get it.

A couple of parts were a bit big for the flatbar bender I had access to, so for the big ones I went a bit caveman with them and beat to shape. I think I've mentioned my hammer in an earlier part of the thread.....its a big hammer.

Image

I also scalloped the smaller pipes to the right shape.
Again, the computer came to the rescue here making it easy. I printed some paper templates which I then wrapped around the pipe, spray painted to mark, then cut to shape. Pretty straight forward.

Image

Lastly, I got my large tubes from the CNC bender. Claimed accuracy is less than 1 degree to my drawings, and there isn't any of that unsightly reduction in tube diameter on the bends.

Image

With all the parts preshaped, I'm just left with a big jigsaw to weld together.
:D

That is pure genius. You could seriously turn this into a kit and sell it back to the UK I reckon.

Looks like a much better way to do it than mine.

Can't wait to see more progress.

Cheers

One great idea that a friend of mine uses is to make the steel plates self-jigging. He adds little tabs to some parts and little rectangular slots in their mates. That way they slot together and stay together when you weld them out. No need for expensive jigs and can be shipped to customer for welding without worrying that they won't put it together right.

The tabs and slots add a tiny amount to the laser cutting cost but a well worth it.

The trailers shown in the video below are put together like that.

Thats incredible. You could modify that 3D frame for almost any engine now. You have made an awesome platform which you could use/copy/sell. I realise other COULD do it, but you have done it.

I am a bit in love with the renderings. I love CAD

Your quick to get to work!

Get a 3d printer and you could make some model minis!

At the end of the build once I have all the knowhow and finished models, it would be quite simple to do if there was any demand for it. The thing that was more appealing to me though was having a record of what was built, so if I have any problems down the track with any of the custom parts, I can rectify it, and knock up a new one before I even dismantle the car.

I could modify it or bin it and start over – given I have the suspension and a few of the panels done. I could also go for an engine that may not have been proven to fit before and have a good idea how easy or hard it would be.

Here’s a rendering for you: Little preview of things to come. :D

The door is incorrect for a Rover, should have a square corner on the front lower corner not round like an Ozzy mini  .
Sorry couldn't resist.

Small update: started frame assembly.
:D

I'm only tacking it together, I'll get it fully welded after I confirm the engine fits, that the frame fits the car, and that the engineer is satisfied.
