Post subject:  Rotary mini: Can it be done? Stay tuned!

Hi guy's, ever since I bought snoball I keep looking at the RX7 and wondering if the all-mighty Rotary can breath life into my morrie, and would wish it so.

I am putting out a request for help on finding information that can help me on achieving my mission of Rotorizing a mini. Anything would be greatly appreciated; all information will be looked into.
Wish me luck!!!!!!

mate i wish you luck as i can say it will not be easy
i have seen one or two attempts and they needed a large tunnell through the car its the torque you cant use a mini box
no way rx7 engine need a small one

its been done here on the sunshine coast, QLD. company called 'rotormax' has done this conversion several times.

they use a mitsubishi cordia gearbox. I dont have much more info then that. im sure you could find rotormax in the white pages though.

Last time I talked to Doug at rotormax the conversion cost about 7 grand drive in drive out. that may have been with a supercharger as well though, can't remember, it was a couple of years ago.

I've heard they just used a single rotor. Probably 13B.

Sorry man, but mazda only ever made single rotarys in concept form.
10A,12A,13B are all twin rotors! 8)

Yea, i recon i'll drop a stock 12A 4/6 port with EFi, *MAYBE* an Extend port, anymore would be stupid!!!

Fwd is th go, Rwd would be waaaaaay too expensive!!

I spoke to Rotormax a while ago, the fella's name is Doug. nice guy...

As has been mentioned in other forums, he used a nice new 13b, minus one rotor, which i think makes it some kind of 10a *shrugs*.. He used some VW adaptor plate to mate the motor to a cordia box, although i have no idea what kind of VW, im fairly sure its not a stock car, there special plates for some competition engine swap application i think.... And i think the carb (downdraught webber) fouls the bonnet in the conversion, making a scoop neccecary, like the one on my ugly machine heh... He said the exhaust was just a single pipe!... he also said they are quick, with 14,000 rpm on the cars, although i dont know how reliably, how long... but they are running in a mild state of tune... Torque is also a concern... my 1330 pull hard from down low... i dont want to lost that, and im not game to fork 8k to find out i have!

damn that would be sick i'd need delaxatives so i would stop myself shittin myself
the only bad thing is u could only drive it on the dragway as you wouldn't be able to engineer it

i guess doug would be setting the motor up North/South if he was using a VW box/transaxle, hence the loss of one rotor. But id be doing it East/West. And as for engineering it, i think it could be done. The only issue is what gearbox, and what subframe work would be carried out.

you would be best of modifying a standard subframe, as for what gearbox look for a relivly short fwd gearbox and get a custom plate made up to match it to the rotary

If he used a Cordia box it's mounted east/west. As for the `VW adaptor plate' it's probably the one that's used to adapt other motors onto VW boxes- as is/was common in open wheeler race cars & hillclimb specials.

Why only use 1/2 a 13B? Maybe it's to get under the cc limit for a road Mini...???

does anyone know what the cc limit for a road going mini is?

in NSW it is 3x the body weight NA,,,,, 2.5x the body weight turbo

So to put a 12a in a mini it must weight in at 800kg as i think they class a 12a at 2400cc

Is it really worth the effort?
6 port 12a around 80kw and lacks tourque, drinks fuel like a family six cylinder and unreliable
You can get a better result and save money sticking with the A-series,G13b, Starlet turbo etc.
Believe me Ive owned a couple of rotaries before turbo and bridge-ported they are a headache and technology with conventional engines has caught up and surpassed the efficiency of a street rotary.
