For the main spars (running from upper section of the subframe towers to the front of subframe) and brace, I've used 32mm OD structural tube with 3mm wall thickness. For the brace bars that run under the engine/gearbox, I've used approx 20-25mm OD. I've used structural tube, as mechanical tubing is used in LIGHT gauge applications - an important distinction. As an example, structural steel is what they used for roll cages. Any flat steel used was 4-5mm. My engineer was more than happy with the design and strength of the frame. My subframe :

What engine conversion was that for? Where do you buy structural steel and how did you get it bent? |

Where do you buy structural steel and how did you get it bent? 4EFTE (1.3T) from Toyota Starlet GT Local steel place - I just specifically asked for structural steel. It was all bent with a hand pumped-hydraulic pipe bender, although the thicker stuff was pretty hard to bend (not mandrel bent). |

Ok, gotta get myself one of those pipe benders. Considering a Micra engine conversion for my Leyland and the bending was the part that looked like the biggest hassle (I have a TIG welder already) |

There's one on in a clubby on The Mini Forum that looks very nice. I've a micra powered deluxe so any questions ask away. |
