i think they say you cant repair them cause like a normal tyre when its been driven on flat its pretty much stuffed. even though a runflat is designed to hold the weight of the car for a certain amount of kms i suppose the tyre companies reckon its a safer option to just scrap it then do a repair.

There are 2 reasons for scrapping the tyre and fitting a new one..
1) More profit on a new tyre.
2) Less chance of a liability claim on a new tyre than a repaired tyre.

Most of the problems that we are facing with tyres all stems from the recall of the Ford Exploders that were fitted with Firestone tires. Ford specified a low pressure to improve the ride. The tyres tucked in during cornering and the cars rolled over causing the American drivers to spill their coffee. The resulting lawsuits and settlements make the tyre industry very nervous so that is why we are facing the non-repairable tyre and also the supposed five year use by-date.

yeah i agree,but...if they could only invent a tyre that was indestructable such as run flats then i would gladly split with the cash, not knocking bmw,but surely to christ you have to think that they are on to a good thing money wise.if you you could repair run flats then that would be better than sliced bread, the reality is you can not.until thats a solid promise, for crap sake this is 2008.love the car, will be investing in old school tyres.i wish to point out that this is my only winge on the bini, having had the oppertunity to take it around queensland raceway at fulll tilt, well what can i say, most fun sitting down, and im forty years old,so know what im talking about...cheers andy

didnt say on a mini that they would cost $800. i said usual runflat prices is around $800 but thats for something like a 17 or 18" rim.

let me make this clear. YOU CAN NOT REPAIR RUNFLATS. you physically can yes. but you are not meant to and who ever repaired that tyre should be shot. the courses tyre fitters need to do on runflats explains it to a T not to repair them. they are to be replaced.

and with the air pressure system i didnt say it was in a mini. BMW AND HOLDEN CAPRICE HAVE IT. they have a sensor inside the rim on the valve that when fitting the tyre you need to be aware of. once you replace the tyre yes you need to reset the system. i havent dont any mini runflats yet to date but i have done one caprice each tyre costing that person $700 each.

??? did you read my post properly. are rim that a runflat is fitted to is completely different to a third party rim. it can be fitted with a standard tyre though its not recommended. if you want to get rid of the runflats all together change them and be done with it.

has much as a pain in the ass these tyres are to fit they are really good and are worth the money. not so much for city use but when you drive out in the country or do alot of highway driving.

Lots of MINIs run on 17" rims, runflats are only fitted to 16" or 17" on MINIs.

I imagine that the tyre fitters courses are run by tyre companies that want to sell more tyres.

Why would anyone be interested in knowing about tyre pressure systems for Holdens and BMWs? The thread was about runflats on a MINI. :?

So you haven't dealt with any MINI wheels but you know that their rims are completely different and not recommended for normal tyres? Or is this another post about some other type of vehicle? :?

By the way minimy if you want to know about tyres and wheels for MINIs check out the FAQs on MINI2.com the best source of accurate information for the MINI. :)
There is also a thread in the Wheels & Tyres forum on MINI2.com about non runflat tyres for the MINI in Australia :)
