Hi All,

I have a 2002 JCW with 180kms. It makes a noise at low revs, but high load (in 5th or 6th pulling up a hill) like a high pitch ticking that is not consistent and when you back off the throttle it drops away.

it sometimes makes a little rattle on a cold morning also. I replaced the tensioner a few months back and it helped a bit but I wonder if the whole job needs doing.

does this sound like timing chain?

Thanks

First noise from your description seems like pinging (engine knocking / pre detonation). Normally from having low octane or poor quality fuel or too much timing advance. It can cause big engine problems

Definitely get it checked. As Tim suggested sounds like knocking, but with a modern car they normally have a “knock sensor” to automatically adjust timing and protect the motor from damage. Perhaps this is faulty?

Thank you. yes, that may be the issue. I put standard fuel in last time I filled up due to not having high octane stuff at the pump. that could be the issue.

Thanks
