ok, this will set the cat among the pigeons!
I have 3 carb setups that I could use on my 1275 's'. First is twin 1 1/4 su's, I think originally off a mk1 's' (judging by the aircleaner box). Second is 40dcoe on a swan neck manifold, K&N filter, nice linkage setup. Third is a 45dcoe on (I think) a 5inch straight manifold with ram pipes and those foam socks that fit over the ram tubes. I have no idea what jets/needles/tubes any of these carbs have, I was going to get whatever set-up I use reco'd and jetted when the time came.

Of the three, the su's would probably be the easiest to use, followed by the 40dcoe on the swan-neck (no body mods) the 45 would require an airbox just to make it fit with the straight manifold and ram tubes.

My question is this: Can anyone suggest which carb set-up would be best to use? I'm thinking the 45 because it is biggest and going an 's', I really need as much air going in as possible, but I don't want to mess around with the firewall. I'm not sure if the 45 will fit on the swan-neck (which has the 40 on it now), besides which, according to god (vizard) most swan-necks are not much good anyway. To me, the best would be 45 on swan-neck with K&N, it would fit nicely.

Comments? suggestions? abuse?

Avoid the swan neck. Although they fit nicely, they don't add any value performance wise.

Best bet would be the 45mm on a Redline medium length (4") manifold or similar. Yes the 45 would fit on the swan neck. With the above setup, use the offset ramflo filter and it should just fit with no (or only minor firewall mods). I recently did this in my clubman and did not have to modify the firewall.

There was another post where photos and details of the right ramflo to use were posted. I "think" it is 440S, but don't quote me.

Drmini also suggests replacing the foam filter element with a reusable alternative (ie like a unifilter which you oil) but these aren't readily available and may take some chasing.

You could probably sell the 40dcoe and swan neck; and longer manifold to help fund the purchase of the Redline unit.

anybody looking for a good used swan-neck manifold? I'm inclined towards the 5in manifold idea, but I just spent a fortune on magnolia gauges and speedo for my centre binnacle and I really would like to use them and if I fit an airbox I can't and and.....

I'd be tempted to go the 45DCOE, but buy another manifold, a 3.5" one. Then you can fit it in without modding the firewall (running a Ramflo filter), and the manifold isn't a swan neck. I have a swan neck manifold on my 40DHLA (only temporarily), and with the Ramflo filter on, I certainly have a heap of spare room between the carb and firewall! Yes, steer clear of the swan neck manifolds, they are only good for people who want a Weber carb for looks rather than performance....

Anto.

Sell the twin 1 1/4 on ebay, they will fetch $300 if in bling bling condition. Call around and you will be able to find a redline medium length manifold for $180 approx. This plus the 45 and a lynx ramflo 445S P5 Offset filter (with foam and oil) will just fit without knocking the firewall. My suggestion is to knock it in alittle to be on the safe side. All in all don't let it sit on the firewall.

Sell the 40 with manifold and get $300 or so for it. Then you'll have spare change :D

But I'd definately go the 45, esp if you want to mod the engine later on (if it aint already modded).

Also I linkages, jets, chokes ... if it doesn't already have linkages then you're looking at the bad side of $100 for a set, so if the 40 has linkages, and the 45 doesn't... you get the idea... Not sure if jets, and chokes are interchangeable but you are looking at $50 -$100 depending on what you need to change there too (example: air correction jets, $18 for one and you need 2!). Just be mindful that just cause you have the carb, that's not all you need, as chances are it's missing this missing that.

There are pics of my setup with 45 DHLA and a redline medium length manifold (I think) here and as you can see, the clearance is tight to say the least!!!

40 does have linkages, actually quite a nice setup, if I get time tonight I will post pics. Everything else seems to be there, I was thinking of using the 40's linkages on the 45 if I chose to use that anyway. Don't know about jets and stuff, I haven't even decided what to do with the engine yet, I was going to wait until the engine work was done then do the research on jets and tubes setup to match. In my perfect world I was hoping to get it set up properly on a dyno, but I don't even know who to contact here in briz with regards to dyno'ing a mini with a webber, anybody have a suggestion?

Bill, Plenty of options (good ones too). Don't know how well you know Bris but where you work you aren't that far from the Romano mob on Lytton Rd, Morningside.

When the time comes however, speak to Matt Read, he is on this forum occassionally. For a nominal fee he may assist. Any fee would be well and truely recouped in picking his brain for ten minutes. I'm sure he's forgotten more about minis than I know. He's only in Tingalpa too.

well, I pulled both webers and manifolds apart last night, I think I might have to stick with the 45 on the 5inch and just make it fit, it looks like the 5 inch manifold has been port matched to the head it came off, and I can't be bothered going and getting a new manifold and having it port matched. So, if you are still interested in the 40?

I've met Matt Reid a couple of times, he is on my list of people to talk to when I start on the engine

and I have already started looking at moving my binnacle forward a little bit, it won't look right (to me) unless I go the full works rally theme and put in the extra dash for tacho behind the wheel, but that's ok, that was the look I was aiming at with the rest of the car anyway, thanks for all your advice guys, most helpful!!
