They are just standard S rockers Doc. I will take the shims out and see what difference it makes.

Thanks to everyone for their comments and suggestions.

Did you ever figure out what the issue was.

I have checked everything and it appears the spacers under the rocker posts amplified the gap more than I appreciated. Whilst putting the spacers in enabled me to position the rocker pads over the valve stem it would have required replacing the push rods with longer ones. I have removed the spacers and the gap has closed sufficiently, however the rockers are running uphill a bit , but not enough to be an issue. Interestingly, even after the head was shaved the rockers adjustment bolts are still screwed down to the last 25% of the thread.
Thanks to all for your comments and help.
Tim

As a general rule the rocker pads should be in the middle of the valve stem at 50% lift.
With stock rockers and hi- lift cams (giving ~.400" valve lift) it's generally recommended to mill .040" off the bottom of the rocker posts to achieve this (stock lift on a 1098 or 1275 was around .318", ie about .080" less).

A reground cam will result in a smaller base circle.
