One of the reasons, I like the idea of using the 998 pistons (and i see rods- which I have) is that rings and things are cheaper in e 998 size..

So, if some time down the line, the block needs a re-ring, I'll save $20 :P

If you want a manual on how to do it.. Buy a copy of Clive Trickey's book "Tuning the Classic Mini".

Interestingly the term "classic" was applied in 1966.

Cheers, Ian

Cush,
There is also `More Mini Tuning' by Clive Trickey.
1968.
Published by Speed & Sport Publications, UK.

I have a copy if you are interested.

PM me, I'm not after a fortune.
I just don't have an 850 any more.

ps. I also have `BMC Minis- Maintenance, Tuning and Modification'- David Marshall & Ian Fraser.
cost me 42s 6d back in 1965.

You can have it cheap too.

850 land speed car.

I've been tossing around ideas for engine configurations to keep it under 1 litre. Sure a 998 is fine, but will need a block with good enough std bores to take some new std size flat top pistons. +.020 will put it in the up to 1500 class... no way!

So I have my 850 sitting there. Engine in it runs at least. Spose to be 5000miles since rebuild... yeah right, but maybe. Pull it down and inspect at least.

So... I can bore it right out and fit flat top 998 pistons and rods and deck the block to suit.

But... can you get decent flat top 850 pistons?! Saves having to deck the block like crazy.

I/PRO record in Aus is 96.blahblahblah MPH. Could beat that easy!!! Record at Bonneville is 123mph (world record for I/PRO?).

Pretty hard to get ANY 850 pistons now.
Remember the 850 had split skirt pistons, were not the strongest things if you were to rev them.
I would go with good 998 flatties and deck the block.

it wont be as easy as you think, but yes i would think 96 is certainly achieveable with some heavy modifications.

123mph is out of the question tho, and dont forget 850's dont have the gearing as standard to reach those speeds.

I was going to set the PNG landspeed record in my e-type before some buggar in a former v8 supercar took it 260km/h on a 3 mile disused airfield.

Change the diff - it doesnt say how long you need to get there. Go for it Poeee. An 850 , moonshot diff, a little aero and the Nullabor - bingo 98mph.

120-something you would just add horsepower

11:1 compression ratio. Cam designed for power at top end. 202 head with big valves and port work. Good inlet manifold with 1.75" SU or possibly wet manifold injection (wont give more power than a carby, but will give as much power as a carby with the PERFECT needle). EDIS style ignition. LCB's.

Remember we aren't building it for usable torque. We are building it to have it all at top end.

Gotta be better than my 1275 LS' engine that is bog stock, worn out and probably tuned at 70% of its potential, and I know how fast that will go (the speed limit of course).

3.44 diff with 10" rims @ 100mph is 6000rpm.

Get me some flat top 998 pistons and I can start building it tonight.

Another thing, on using 998 pistons, and you're using 998 rods, what does that mean for the bottom end?

998 rod on an 850 crank, which bottom end and thrust bearings do you use?
