Benjamin is running 1098 standard dish +.040" Hypatecs I think, just copy what he's doing.. 8)
Nothing wrong with a good 1100 crank and pistons for this application, just don't rev it past 7K.
If you use a 998 crank and pistons you are giving away `off boost' torque due to the much reduced displacement. Kazjim used a 998 crank for his first turbo build, it went fine once on boost but was a dog before spooled up.
2nd build with a 1098 crank and a 1275 head (to avoid gasket problems) went MUCH harder- last I heard it got 115+ HP ATW.

Just use a Standard 1098 crank, meaning standard journals which means the cranks has not been reground smaller because of wear, you want it to be as thick as possible.

Dished pistons will lower the comp, and you can open up the chambers to lower the compression. Not sure if ben has done anything different.

Use a megajolt as well 8)

hey guys

ill probably be going down this way with a turbo motor, just wanted to know a couple of things like what are you doing for a head gasket and where are you mounting the turbo on the engine
is it possible to buid a engine like this but not run the turbo on the engine so it can get through a roadworthy

thanks i would love to see some pics of the build and keep us upto date on the progress

I would use vented discs 4 pot cal's. I am unsure of the law in Oz but I have s dics on my rally cross van and its crap. Looking at the turbo Minis at santa pod a few weeks ago they fly. It seems the less expensive way is to put Metro Turbo vents and have them turned down to S size and use the four cal's.

But I do agree you can use S discs but how quick can you stop from 110mph?

re the brakes, i like the feel of the s discs so i dont think i would change they seemed fine at the drags slowing from 90mph, on the road you dont go past 110km/h anyway.

hypatecs have enought dish for 6-10psi as a std 1098 has a compression ratio of 8.5:1 anyway, so perfect for 10psi. Im using hypatec 60+ with a STD 12g295 head so big chambers around 27cc after minimal skim. I think my compression is around 8.2:1.

far as head gasket i use ACL monotorque had absolutly no dramas with 6psi, but have blown one on 10psi. I have now reaplce std head studs with Arp studs and seems fine now on 10.

i would use a std dissy for now as its cheaper than megajolt and far less work, but if you want to spend money megajolt is the way. Around $500 if you do most of the work , and is 3d ignition map, and best of all no dissy.

If its the one I am thinking of (mine, hehe) its getting there... s-l-o-w-l-y
Ex manifold is done and stress relieved (thanks Ben and Doc) the block crank rods are all here. Turbo done and ready, no pistons yet... will be about a month to two months before they are ready.

Head and block going to be acid dipped (hopefully this week)
Working out if I want rollmaster timing chain set like on my existing motor or a belt kit... cam is already at GRs ready to be ground... lots of work, but getting there.

Peter

If I remember right, you are doing up a 998 Peter?

I'll be interested to see the final outcome if Bens is anything to go by. 8)

No worries, ill start a new thread for my build... photos hopefully on Sat (unless the wife planned something)

Yeah, plan is a screamer 998 Turbo.
Its a T2 like Bens... its Hi-Flowed, turbo will sit above clutch housing... Ill keep the 7.5" Cooper S brakes, they are great.

Peter.
