If you fit an A+ layshaft to a pre A+ gearbox case you will see what needs to happen. The end of the layshaft won't protrude thru the web far enough for the lock plate to engage.
To fit an A+ layshaft into an A series case I made myself a little tool, using a stepped hole cutter and a piece of steel rod about 12" (30cm) long to lengthen the shaft.. Very effective, cheap and can be used with a hand held power or air drill.
The size of the stepped hole cutter is ( where it matters ) 16.5mm and 18.5mm this allows the cutter to sit in the existing hole and cut an 18.5mm recess, which is bang on for dropping the shaft into with a little clearance
