^^^^^^^ I think that you cannot get the crimping machine down on to the original outlet because it is down so far from the outer rim.?????

Dunlop had a special crimping machine that reached down inside to do it, when they made the bags. The ones Pirtek etc use cannot fit in there.

Crimping it on the way they did was pretty cheapo solution, if they had threaded it instead, hose replacements would be easy peasy.
If the barb connection on the bag was thicker we could thread it and screw a socket on, but it's too thin for this.
[edit] The barb pipe on the plate is 5/8" diameter at the bag, but it's machined down to 3/8" for most of its length where the hose sits on. Inside diameter is ~9/32-5/16" so it's very thin.
That's why I cut it off, back to the shoulder, before drilling & tapping the thread.

That is strange. The rest of the unit seems pretty tough to me.

I attacked one with a disc cutter once. I was curious to see what was inside & how they were put together.

It sure took some effort. The metal & rubber components are thick as.......

Doc - have you done any research on the availability of hoses that externally match the original? My MK II Cooper S hoses have a rough cross-hatched pattern. I don't know, but maybe all hydrolastic hoses across the Mini, or even the full BMC range had the same hoses.

Anyone?

In any case, if something similar were available and suitable I'd pay more for it when refurbishing my old units.

Nope, I'm using standard Pirtek hydraulic hose- there really is not much choice now, hose is all imported but it was once made here, including that patterned stuff.
I have about a dozen (Oz made) bags, they all have that patterned hose.

I realise there are anoraks among us, but if the original hose is now NLA there's not much can be done to keep it kosher if you want NEW hose.
I could shorten some originals and recrimp them to a 3/8 BSP fitting, IF I find any that are in good, not rotted condition. None of my dozen looks good enough for this, they have all been weathered one way or another.

Anorak: A derogatory term meaning the anal retentive accumulation of miniscule, arcane, and quite often useless bits of information.

At last, one of my conditions has a name. My wife will be rapt. She's got to the stage where she doesn't even comment when I sit up in bed at night reading a Mini parts catalogue. :D

It's been pumped up 2 days now, and is still holding 300psi.
I guess there are no leaks then. :P

Around 275psi I think.
[edit] Book says 263 early-283psi late, Cooper S/Clubman GT 292psi.
Of course, this is approximate, these days 40 years on we just set to height and bugger the pressure. :P

Black book says pressurise system to 350psi when fitting a new bag, then let back down after 1hr.

Just out of curiosity would the MG (Morris 1100) be the same pressure.
Bigger bags but heavier car?

From Todd Miller's Austin America USA) site-
(An Austin America is a 2 door Morris/Austin 1100).
"The fluid pressure in the system should be 220lbs. and the America's correct ride height is 13 5/8" measured from the center of the front wheel to the underside of the wheel well opening in the front fender. There is no measurement given for the rear height, but the car should sit level. If it does not sit level when the proper pressure is reached, you'll need to look to other sources for that problem."

Letting my inner anorak out...

Not a perfect match .... but came across when browsing Demon Tweeks...
How about these as "possibles":

(Though operating pressures may be low)

(Operating Pressures look better...)

or even....
Just a sleeve over suitable hose...

Anyway just first finds.ideas...

The original hose Dunlop used has a diamond pattern on it. Sorry, but this Aeroquip stuff looks wrong too...
I wish I could buy proper new steel hose ends 5/8-18 UNF but they seem unobtainium here.
I'll replate some old ones soon (I've been down with the flu the last week or so).
