Those are the stock main bolts- are OK, but ARP are better.

You can also get an ARP stud + nut kit to replace the bolts on non-S 1275s.

Why is a stud better or worse than a bolt?

The corner under the head of the bolt is a stress raiser and typical bolt failures are in this area. Using a stud and nut removes this failure mode so arguably improves reliability of the joint.

I have used cap screws for mains- I think the most important thing is quality of fastner and fitment to the correct torque. Make sure it has rolled threads and reputable brand.

I have used grade 8 bolts on centre straps- just ensure the bolt is `really' grade 8 (6 radial lines on the head).
BEWARE of current `high? tensile' bolts marked 8.8, these are nowhere near strong enough.
There is a thread on theminiforum warning of this.

Numbers like 8.8 or 10.9 are in a different grading system (metric?) compared to the old system. Class 8.8 bolts are comparable to grade 5 bolts under the old system. Class 10.9 is similar to old grade 8.

Still trying to source ARP main cap and con rod bolts/studs, some suppliers say ARP don't do them others don't have them in stock and some just don't reply  .
Anyway while I'm trying to buy parts I figured I try to get a full shopping list together. Basically I'm starting with a 100% bare block so what do I need and what should I get?
I can think of the following but are their brands I should look for?
-welsh plugs
-gasket kit for block (without headgasket) and gearbox
-full bearing kit for block
-bearing and bush kit for remote box
anything else?

Yes small J 1100S rods are same as Cooper S and take the 3/8 bolts.
ARP no 206-6001

Big journal 1100S rods all take 11/32" bolts. Same as an MGB.
ARP no 206-6002.

Karcraft carries both bolts.
Also try www.vpw.com.au that's where I buy ARP 155-6002 (bigblock Ford FE) bolts, which also will fit S rods (cheaper).

re your previous questions I would use ACL Duraglide bearings, made in Tassie and sold here by Karcraft, Minis Plus and others.

ARP A series rod bolts-
http://www.vpw.com.au/Category/Index/408979

I have not found them cheaper elsewhere in Oz.
Maybe at Rocket Industries if you have an account.. I find their website is a dog's breakfast.
