Ok thanks doc, one more for you.... Did the mini clubman 1098cc come with a suitable manifold OR can it be modified to fit? Even if it tale a quick machine at work

Sorry no, all the 1098s came with a puny 1-1/4" HS2 carb. The late 998s had a single HS4 instead. Neither of these manifolds flow great, or will work properly with these hi-flow carbs.

Is it as simple as bolting on a 1.75" manifold?

I think to get the benefit from a bigger better flowing carby like this one, you need more engine work than just bunging an inlet manifold on.
The secret to getting good power from an A series is the camshaft, and gas flow through the head. So I'd do this first. Also the engine needs to be in good condition to make HP, not on its last legs.
A big carby and manifold is just the icing on the cake. :P

The previous owner gave me the receipt (which I've lost) for the head rebuild for running on unleaded and it had a new Cam then. Was on receipt as stage 1 modified Cam but I wouldn't really know without pulling it out adding getting a micrometer on it.

I'll just do a full rebuild down the track I reckon. Do it all then

Just had a look at these.

MG test... identical conditions except they ported the spacer...... ????? so not identical and air filter????

I can understand lag factors say against a weber but to me neither of the setups could have been running optimally before this.

both SU hif44 and Weber can flow the same as say the HSR 42...,,, not knocking these, i do think they will do a good job, but unless there is something different in the way they present air fuel/ better atomisation, better speed match? then i would have to think that any of the above CAN achieve the HP increases..... the beauty could be it is just easier to do so on these ( only 3 jetting options ) and the space...

I would be interested to see what carb would be the right size for the different engines. The smallest version is a 42mm - that's 1 3/4", so two of those would have a fair amount of airflow! One 42mm would probably suit a 998 just fine... very tempting! :D

Gaf told me it's finally been Blinged and is on its way.
Probably will fit it to an RE7 manifold...

btw in that MGB comparo in my 1st post, the SUs they compared it to were only HS4s... no wonder 42mm Mikunis outflowed them.
